WHET to Rollerblades?

Why isn't inline skating popular anymore? I used to see people all the time on the street and in parks flossing some high end bad boys. Now, not so much.

Is it too much of a 90's thing? Is it because they became known as "fruit boots" and straight guys decided it was better to have flabby hips and chicken legs than be associated with teh gay?

What gives?

Re: WHET to Rollerblades?

I still have a pair of them in the trunk of my car, but I will agree it was more of a 90s trend. I am more into cycling as my outdoor exercise of choice.

Re: WHET to Rollerblades?

I think he meant WEHT (what ever happened to). I recently pulled my roller blades out of the closet and went out in the neighborhood with my fiance (I had a womens pair that belonged to my ex). Somehow she managed to snap the clasps that lock them around your ankle which made wearing them pretty dangerous. I'm too embarrassed to go out on them by myself so back in the closet they went

Yea. That's probably it. I'll quit the bicycle and pick up the roller blades after I grow a thick black moustache, move to Key West, and start dating men.

Really, I think that people just aren't into learning. I doubt it's too hard. But if you can cycle, or skate, I think most people would cycle.

The hardest part about rollerblading is tell your parents you're gay:

Re: WHET to Rollerblades?

In 1996 and 97 (when I lived in NYC) I used to go roller blading in Central Park every Saturday morning. There were thousands of people, it was a lot of fun. I ran in Central Park over this summer on a Saturday morning and I don't think I saw a single roller-blader. They're a lot of fun a great exercise, I don't know why they fell out of favor.

Re: WHET to Rollerblades?

I can imagine they may still be used sparingly in outdoor hockey. I don't know.

Also, the idea that rollerblading is the activity that gives men shapely, muscular legs (as opposed to, say, soccer or squats or biking) is hilarious to me.

Re: WHET to Rollerblades?

I used to rollerblade as a means of transportation before I got my licence. I always wanted to be as cool as Mitchell in "Airborne".

Now I only put them on when I take a dog for a walk/run. Works out pretty good in this scenario.

I think that AIDS became a big problem among roller blades users. A lot of roller bladers died. Richard Gere made a movie about it.

Re: WHET to Rollerblades?

WHET was a distant PBS channel you could pick up on a summer night when the cloud cover was just right.

Re: WHET to Rollerblades?

Back in the 90's I had a sweet pair that looked like hockey skates with wheels - not gay at all. More recently I had a pair that admittedly looked a little suspect, but I would go out around my neighborhood at night for some excercise.. A couple summers ago I too snapped the clasps because they were too old though.

I ended up trying to skate home in the middle of the night with my ankles almost breaking, lol
