Re: Who else is sick of non handicapped people parking in handicap spaces?
I could care less about the handicap spaces. The big problem is people parking in fire lanes. Drives me nuts.

Re: Who else is sick of non handicapped people parking in handicap spaces?
A few years ago I had a temporary one that was perfectly legit, but my handicap wasn't one that was immeiately visible. Even then I hardly used it. But then one day I was at a McDonalds for lunch, and I drove around the lot for a minute, and I relalized that the only open space was a handicapped space, and it was actually a really oddly located handicapped space, as it was actually on the back wall of the lot, about as far away from the door as possible. But whatever, I was hungry, I had the placard, so I parked there.
Anyway, as I'm at the counter getting ready to order, this old guy comes up to me and starts giving me shit about parking there, something about he was glad he didn't have his 80 year old father with him or some such crap. I gave it right back to him about how I had a perfectly legitimate placard in the window, but I didn't like to use it because of assholes like him who assume that a person can't be handicapped because they don't look it, but that was the only available space in the whole lot. I also told him if he really felt like wasting his time, he could call the cops on me. Shut his ass right up.

Re: Who else is sick of non handicapped people parking in handicap spaces?
My mom had a placard the last few years of her life. She was suffering from COPD (emphysema) and congestive heart failure. No, she didn't limp or use a wheelchair, but she was unable to walk long distances or tolerate a lot of heat. If anybody had questioned her use of the placard in my presence, I would have decked them.

Handicap spaces should be labeled differently -- Very Handicapped, Slightly Handicapped, Undetectable Handicap, etc. This would make life easier for everyone.

Using this phrase qualifies you for a placard. Congrats!

I honestly couldn't care less since there always seems to be available handicapped spots in parking lots.

Re: Who else is sick of non handicapped people parking in handicap spaces?
When I was in high school, two of my best friends(brothers) obtained one of those handicapped placards. A group of 16 year olds in perfect health, we would use that to park in handicapped spots all over town. I never felt bad about it, because I was a teenager, but ever since, when I see somebody park in a handicapped spot, I can only assume that they're being deceitful.

Re: Who else is sick of non handicapped people parking in handicap spaces?
The parking lot at my studio is rather small, but usually adequate. There are two handicapped spaces at the near end of the one row of spaces. Someone with a big truck often parks in the lane next to one of the these spaces. So, not only are they blocking the space (the point of putting them at the end of the row is that there is room to use a lift at the side) they are partially blocking the driving lane.
Someone finally got some spray paint, and marked this area "asshole parking only". |

Re: Who else is sick of non handicapped people parking in handicap spaces?
Individuals parking in a handicapped space with a placard never bother me. People making remarks about others coming out of a car with a placard and telling them they are not handicap annoy me though.

Re: Who else is sick of non handicapped people parking in handicap spaces?
It doesn't bother me too much as I, like others, assume that they have a valid reason if they have one of those placards to hang in their vehicle.
Once I was walking into Target to pick up a few things. Behind me a guy, probably in his early 20s, was slowly walking in as he had a big boot cast on his one leg and had crutches. Behind him was a middle aged woman who was probably 350 lbs or more. The guy walked in and grabbed one of those motorized carts so he could do his shopping. The woman was infuriated as it was the last one and she screamed up and down at him how she should get it because she deserves it for her handicap situation. I felt bad for the guy, especially because the woman took any chance she could, if she saw him, to yell at him for taking her cart and forcing her to walk to do her shopping. ![]()

Re: Who else is sick of non handicapped people parking in handicap spaces?
Yeah, I'm with the young guy on that one. Morbidly obese & lazy are not handicaps.
I was sitting in my car at Kroger and witnessed a guy park in the handicap spot, no tag. I figured he might be running in for something quick (not my business, but I give people the benefit of the doubt), but he gets out of the car and he's wearing a Kroger uniform. He was heading in to work.

Re: Who else is sick of non handicapped people parking in handicap spaces?
This is neither here nor there, but this thread just reminded me that every single car I see that has a handicap logo on it's plate (not the temporary placards) is being driven by a very shitty driver. At least that plate denotes their shittiness so I can better avoid them and drive around them. But I'm not kidding, it's like their handicap is driving.

I confronted a guy the other day about this, and sure enough my suspicions were confirmed: as soon as I started chasing him he was able-bodied enough to easily escape down the street in his wheelchair.

The handicap logo should be part of the license plate. That way, there's far less fakes out there.

I'm not handicapped, so it doesn't effect me if someone parks in those spots.

Re: Who else is sick of non handicapped people parking in handicap spaces?
That pretty much limits handicapped people to their own cars. The last couple of years that my grandma was alive she had a real hard time getting around and didn't even own a car, and it would have been impossible to take her out for meals or to run errands without her placard.

Re: Who else is sick of non handicapped people parking in handicap spaces?
My brother-in-law had to have a muscle removed from his lower leg as well as a couple of bones in his foot. He wears a brace that isn't visible when he wears long pants, and he's gotten good enough with it that he doesn't have much of a limp, but he still can't walk long distances.
Still, he has to deal with assholes who stick their noses into his business wanting to know why he's parked in a handicap parking place, as if he's obligated to share his medical history with them.

Re: Who else is sick of non handicapped people parking in handicap spaces?
As people mentioned, there are many handicaps that aren't apparent. I had a friend who had an artificial leg. Since she was young, people used to give her a hard time about using handicap parking. I wished she would just take off her leg and hit those nosy nellies over the head with it. As long as someone has a legal placard, they should be allowed to park in those space without being harassed by wannabe doctors.
