It was interesting. We probably saw about 1/8 of the building, though.

And money. Lots and lots of money went into that place. My certainty that the LDS Church is basically a corporation in church drag has been further bolstered.

Plus, the tour guides (a missionary senior couple) got really edgy when one of my group asked if the angel on top of the temple represented Moroni.

I was also amused that the ten-minute film history of temples noted that the Mormon temples in Kirtland, OH and Nauvoo, IL were "abandoned" ... um, no, they're owned by the Community of Christ (a Mormon splinter group) after a protracted court battle.

Don't worry, I behaved myself. The mishies got one of my friends, though. I think she's going to get a free Book of Mormon and a pain in the ass for months to come.

It's not a big deal. I got my Book of Mormon, and 2-3 visits from earnest young people. I've found that Mormon missionaries are polite and leave as soon as I say, "No, thank you."

Shoot, this just reminded me of a question you could've asked. The angel always looks so clean and shiny. How does it get cleaned? I wondered this when they built the one in San Diego too.

The Kirtland temple is owned by the Community of Christ, but the Nauvoo temple is owned and operated by the Utah LDS Church. the original Nauvoo temple was nearly destroyed by fire. What was left was eventually demolished and the stones used in other construction. In the ensuing years, the LDS church repurchased the site in pieces until it owns the entire original block, and rebuilt the temple on the same footprint, and made the outside a near replica of the original.
