Re: Is There Any Place To Live Safe From Mother Nature's Wrath?

If this had truly been an act of God, the tornado would not have missed the University of Alabama campus when it passed through Tuscaloosa.*

*Don't really mean that.

Re: Is There Any Place To Live Safe From Mother Nature's Wrath?

a friend of mine decided to drive to New Orleans the day of the Tornados. Him and his wife and three kids
jumped in the car in Kentucky and started to drive, not knowing the severity of the storms.

When it started to get bad his cousin in NO was on the phone with him, watching the weather and following where they were, at one point he said, just drive south as fast as you can (they were in Alabama). So my friend was going about 100 on the Interstate, and missed the one part of the storm. The cousin said, "ok looks like you should be good.......oh crap, take the next exit (he was googling the area) take a left and get into a Holiday Inn". So they got off, and did this, they hid in the linen closet with a few other employees. Afterwards they came out, had some damage around them, but the next exit down was flattened, just nothing left. I talked to him yesterday and he was still shaken by it, his voice was breaking and he was still emotional. The tornado just wrecked everything he said, it was a giant mess.
Pretty freaky.

Not really seeing it, although this year is not included in this .gif

Off course it depends on where you consider tornado alley to be.

I'm with you.
I'm in Western PA, and I can deal with the snow in exchange for all of those other things...Our bugs and snakes are also nowhere near as bad as other places...everytime I see some picture of some fucking insanely large spider or roach, or watch a show about some freakishly large or dangerous reptile, I remember why I'm happy where I am.

Re: Is There Any Place To Live Safe From Mother Nature's Wrath?

Smithville, Miss, had an EF-5 tornado, so that's two confirmed now?

NYTimes says toll is at 339 now. U of Alabama has canceled classes, graduation may not happen until August.

I don't know if tornado alley is moving east, I think I saw one report say that the alley was just becoming wider.

Re: Is There Any Place To Live Safe From Mother Nature's Wrath?

We live in the huntsville, alabama area and power went out weds around lunch... there was quite a bit of damage just above and below us.. but our house made it through pretty much unscathed.
one bradford pear tree on our back fence line broke off about half and came down pretty cleanly.. maybe some minor fence damage..

since electricity was out and there was threat of water being shut off eventually.. we decided to use this chance to head down south and visit my parents. (Near the Auburn, Alabama area)..
I figure we will stay down here until power is back at our house.

Re: Is There Any Place To Live Safe From Mother Nature's Wrath?

I lived in Central PA for a long time. Just a good bit of rain and snow. Hot, humid summers. You definately get all four seasons. A few closed school days. 30" of snow on the ground once or twice a year.

In AZ, we don't get much weather. Maybe three times a year there will be rain to the point where roads have minor flooding. And the heat isn't really that bad, even during the four hot months. Unless you have a job where you're working outside in the sun, I wouldn't pay much attention to it.

Re: Is There Any Place To Live Safe From Mother Nature's Wrath?

Well Arkansas is getting it again. Dammit, can't we catch a break? I had to cut my Texas vacation short after seeing a 100% chance forecast of 10-15 inches of rain in my area. Some areas have already hit the 8 inch mark and we still have 24 more hours of raining to go. I've never been in a flood situation or had to worry about it. The weather guy's now keep reassuring people that this outbreak is not tornadic. People are really freaked out about the weather now.

Anybody watching the Weather Channel. Joplin, MO just got pounded by a tornado and destroyed a hospital.

In other news, it was warm here today with blue skies. And it's a nice mild night.

Madison had a terrible hailstorm in 2006 on April 13, my wife's birthday. Many thousands of homes had to have roofs and siding replaced, our house among them. It looked like a damn construction zone all over the city all summer. There have been a lot of hailstorms this spring all around the area but Madison itself has mostly been spared.

Re: Is There Any Place To Live Safe From Mother Nature's Wrath?

Except for my son and I, every member of my family lives in the Joplin area. It was a very, very long night for us, but I got the phone call this morning and everybody in the "first tier" (mother, sister's family, neices) escaped without injury. Can't say the same about their places, but nobody's hurt. Waiting on the second tier (aunt, cousins) now.

Joplin is a 2nd home to me. Mom and Dad from there, met and moved to Ohio before having me and my kid sister. Used to spend most summers there at Grandma's house, and ended up doing my undergraduate studies at Missouri Southern.

Today, there's a field morgue being established in a parking lot of my Alma Mater.

As long as you are able bodied, the snow is just an inconvenience and even sometimes quite enjoyable.

I often think of moving but the places that I'd like have real nature issues.

The devastation is jaw dropping. I've never seen anything like it done by a tornado.

It's a scary site. I was at the mall in Joplin at Chuck E Cheese with my wife and kids when it hit and it was worse seeing it in person than you can imagine
