Flamingo or Planet Hollywood

Now that MGM Grand is charging a $20/night resort fee, I'm looking for a new place to stay and I've narrowed it down to Flamingo and PH. The Flamingo GO rooms get pretty good feedback and they're cheaper than a Hollywood Hip at PH, but I prefer PH's location. Additionally, I like gambling at PH and the music they play is right up my alley. However, I've heard that the rooms' walls are rather thin and that it's popular with the younger crowds, which I kinda hate. I figure I'll need to sleep at least a little, and I'd prefer not to have to put the pillow over my ears to drown out the sounds of crazy kids doing sex to each other. Has anyone stayed at both? If so, which would you recommend?

Re: Flamingo or Planet Hollywood

I'm pretty loyal to Flamingo given the location (I like that location more than PH), but I got a good deal at PH for my next trip in Feburary - their rooms look nice, so I'm giving that a whirl. My advice is that don't worry about where you're gambling (it's the same card for PH or Flam - so you can stay at one and gamble at the other and they are reasonably close). I've always stayed in the basic room at Flam, so if you're talking about GO room and prefer the location, I'd say go for it. I've heard good enough things about the GO rooms.

And yes, the resort fees are lame.

Re: Flamingo or Planet Hollywood

How are Caesar's (Harrah's) properties with offers in the mail? I'm not the biggest gambler, but I do go to Vegas twice a year and spend at least 3-4 nights there, and I have a Total Rewards card, so I hope that counts for something. I never got a damn thing from MGM.

Go to the site, put your TR number in and stay-dates. They really don't do mailers (and their 'offers' are worse than what you get you log in and put dates in).

sometimes they do mailers, but they arrive about a month after they appear in your total rewards account online

as far as the OP's question is concerned:

fuck the flamingo. Pink palace of bullshit. Basic rooms are average. GO rooms look like someone stuck an M80 inside a tub of neopolitan ice cream in the center of the room. Casino has a bunch of pink neon and mirrors everywhere and the layout of the joint makes no sense. However, the pool is supposed to be pretty sweet.

PH Hollywood Hip rooms are pretty nice. Nothing that's going to make you fellate yourself or anything, but the beds are soft and the bathrooms are nice. I've stayed there 3 times so far and have never had an issue with noise coming through walls. It's my preferred place to stay on the strip.

Only problem with PH is that its parking garage is a long fucking ways away from the casino/hotel. But it's also a skybridge walk away from Cosmopolitan & Aria and a 5-10 min walk to other Harrahs properties (Paris, Flam, Ballys, etc.). The vibe is young and full of life in the casino. Hope you like Kesha, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry though, because you'll hear their songs about 30 times before you leave this place for the weekend.

Oh and the pool at PH is mediocre. It's on the 5th floor or so.

But PH also has pretty good restaurants. PF Changs is there if you like Chinese-American food. Plus a steakhouse that's rated tops in Vegas.

Stick with Harrah's over MGM*Mirage if you're looking for room discounts/comps. I barely get platinum every year and haven't paid for a room in about 4-5 years. However, they're tightening the screws on this in 2011 so far. I go 2-3 times a year for 3-4 nights like you do and play a lot of video poker and slots and stuff to earn those points. You won't get many points on table games. They can be generous for regular gold-level players too, so always use your card.

Re: Flamingo or Planet Hollywood

I have only stayed at the Flamingo once a few years ago and I was not disappointed but I wasn't terribly impressed either. My last two trips there I just stayed at a Residence Inn way off strip and drive everywhere (including to my conference at Caesar's) and was very content playing it that way. OTOH, if you plan to drink heavily, being able to get to your room without an automobile is probably a good idea.

Re: Flamingo or Planet Hollywood

I had booked in @ Flamingo, but just got this offer from MGM Grand which actually worked out to cheaper than Flamingo (before resort fees, maybe $10 more per night after resort fees, but it comes with WiFi which I would likely have payed $15/night for @ Flamingo):

http://click.mgg01.net/t/10795466/271940353/12353175/0/

I got 4 nights in Grand Tower including a Fri & Sat for a bit under $270 including taxes. Comes with a 2-1 buffet and some other stuff.

Re: Flamingo or Planet Hollywood

I ended up booking at MGM, too. The deal I got was significantly better than something at Flamingo and PH, despite the presence of a resort fee.

Re: Flamingo or Planet Hollywood

A room for $39/night. After taxes and the stupid resort fee the total came to $350, which isn't bad for 4 nights, including a Friday, in a nice place.

You could still probably get a better deal (w/wifi) at some Harrah's properties with a Total Rewards card. During the CES, I got a room at the Flamingo for 6 nights for a tax-incl. total of $125.

So I got back yesterday from my Vegas trip. If you think the Flamingo is pink, PH is pink on steroids.

I really did not like PH. The casino sucks. Terrible atmosphere: awfully loud, crappy music, young crowd, unfriendly dealers, awful and confusing layout, high table minimums. Did I mention it was loud? I played there about an hour before dinner my first night and never played there again. Spent all my gambling time at Flamingo, Bill's, Monte Carlo, O'Sheas, and Hilton after that. I didn't gamble there long enough to get a good idea of the drink service, but I only remember seeing the waitress twice in that hour (taking an order and delivering - I had one drink).

As for the rooms, they were okay. Strong marks for the bathroom -- very very nice. Bed was pretty good. But I was annoyed with how dark they were, offering very little room lighting and how very little drawer space there is (2 small drawers - and this was in a double room (fortunately I had the room to myself). As for noise, I could hear the next room sometimes, but not much.

We were also annoyed how they demanded to see the secondary player's (on the reservation) ID upon check-in. I've never had to do that at Harrah's nor Flamingo (unless it was the secondary player checking in first). Until that secondary player checks in, they charge you the crappy house rate. Turned out not to be a problem (reverts to the original reservation rate when the 2nd person checks in), but still an annoyance.

It's nice to have the Miracle Mile right there though. And I went to the steakhouse (Striphouse) there on the advice of a friend - yes it is very good. And I feel all the better about the prices there after I heard what other friends that were also in town spent at Cut.

Barring some meal at the Striphouse or one of the other restaurants, I doubt I'll ever set foot in the place again.

I'm with you on PH. I haven't enjoyed the casino much. My sister and her husband stayed at the hotel and enjoyed it but I hated the casino too much to try it.

So basically you are an old curmudgeon and I am young and hip. Thanks.

For starters, the place was kinda confusing at first but now after being there 3-4x, I'm completely used to it. I guess every casino is that way though. But compared to places like the Mirage and MGM Grand, it's not *that* bad.

I can see your complaint about the room. That sorta stuff doesn't matter to me though -- I want quiet and I want darkness because if I'm in the room for 4 hours a night, I damn well wanna be asleep and comfortable for those 4 hours. All a preference thing though.

Table mins can be high for sure, just like most 1st and 2nd tier properties on the strip. I have seen many $10 BJ & Pai Gow tables though. But you won't find them on a Saturday evening.

I dunno, I appreciate the atmosphere much more over the usual hum of the slot machines that you get at most places, even if the club music they pump through there is kinda crappy.

Still, I'd rather slide my dick up and down a cheese grater than to ever stay at Flamingo again.

Not necessarily - I showed my old classy side and young side: I started off my Saturday night in style eating caviar and drinking martinis at Petrossian in the Bellagio. Then moved right over to O'Shea's where the music was blaring and dancers dancing - played beer pong and then blackjack in their party pit.

Like you - I love it dark when I'm sleeping and waking up. It's when I'm looking for shit or ironing where I'd like to have some lighting in the room. I'm not a stickler for the room either (hence why I have no issues with the basic Flamingo, Harrah's, or Bill's rooms) - just give me light when I need it and some drawer space.

I'm surprised a classy guy like you hangs out at O'Sheas. I coulda swore you had to have a barbed-wire arm tattoo or call everyone brah to hang out there. Plus, since it's the "party" place on the strip with low table minimums, it's always jam-fucking-packed. Hate that place.

Drawer space never bothered me, I live out of a carryon bag when I go to vegas

That's showing my age again. I used to do that up until a few years ago on any trip.

And you can't beat the drunken late night BK at O'Sheas.
