Wrestlers that RIP - List at Fox

In the ever "by the way, what ever happened to..." converstation I came upon this over at Fox News. A list of those famous wrestlers that won't be around to watch this weekends 2009 UFC Championship. There's a few a didn't know about. What's surprising is how young and the cause. Pictures and a small write-up.

Wow, a ton of young heart attacks on that list. Sad.

After the passing of Classy Fred Blassie, wrestling is dead to me.

Wow. The amount of heart disease/attacks is truly staggering.

I didn't know Miss Elizabeth was dead!

I remember going to my first wrestling show was also the final match Owen Hart wrestled in Chicago at a non-televised event. He seemed like he had a great personality. So tragic.

Steroids are a hell of a drug.

Was this list posted before or after Umaga passed away today? Crazy coincidence if it was before.

I guess maybe they were mainly local/regional? But how could any list that involved wrestlers and tragedy not include the Von Eric family?

No George "The Animal" Steel, no sale!
EDIT: Because he's not dead!

Interesting that many of the deaths occurred in October as well.

What do these deaths have to do with UFC?

I wanted to at the joke, but I ed.

(That doesn't speak highly of me, but I don't care too much. That was GREAT!)

I'm actually surprised I got it as I haven't been watching wrestling that much over the past few years. (To the point I just watch the WWE PPVs and that's it.)

If you take these shots, you could be a huge star and have millions of fans. If you don't, you have no chance. But you'll be dead by age 43.

I admit I haven't followed wrestling since the Hulk hogan /Andre the Giant days, but i thought even back then he died. I was mistaken, and slightly relieved!

But you'd have a lot in common with the "Super Steelers" ... Jim Clack, Ray Oldham, Dave Brown, Mike Webster, Steve Furness, Joe Gilliam, Tyrone McGriff, and Ray Mansfield all died of heart failures. Of the NFL players from the 1970s and '80s who have died since 2000, more than one in five -- 16 of 77 -- were Steelers.
Quote:
For years, the Steelers have been dogged by rumors that several of them used performance-enhancing drugs in the 1970s. In an interview last year, Jim Haslett, then coach of the New Orleans Saints, admitted to experimenting with steroids as a Buffalo linebacker, and said the use of those drugs among NFL players started with the Steelers. The NFL didn't begin testing for steroids until 1987, becoming the first professional sports league to do so.

I got to meet Owen once at the hotel they were staying at. We basically walked right up to him after they ate dinner and asked for an autograph. Owen couldn't have been a better guy to a couple 8 year old kids.

I knew once when I clicked the link that I would find out about more deceased wrestlers that I didn't know about. This time it was Yokozuna and Flyin' Brian.

Re: Wrestlers that RIP - List at Fox

Umaga was flagged for steroid use by a random drug test in the WWE. As per policy he was asked to get clean and they'd pay for his stay in rehab, he refused quit. I don't think rehab would have saved his life with all the damage done to his heart already, but you never know how much longer he'd have with his family if he did.

Re: Wrestlers that RIP - List at Fox

Bam Bam Bigelow saved 3 kids from a burning house? Crazy.

Man, all these guys died so young. But if you know how the wrestling world works, it's no surprise. I just watched The Wrestler again the other night. Depressing shit right there.
