Teacher sex case nets 12-year prison sentence
Former Portland High teacher was convicted on two counts of statutory rape by an authority figure

A former Portland High School teacher convicted of having sex with her underage teacher's aide has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

District Attorney Ray Whitley said Sandy Binkley "got what she had coming to her."

"(Judge Dee Gay) gave her the maximum sentence and that's what she deserved," Whitley said.

David Ridings, Binkley's attorney, said it was the most egregious abuse of justice in sentencing that he has ever seen. "We hoped that (the judge) would follow the law. He failed miserably at that," Ridings said.

Binkley's attorney had hoped the former teacher would be sentenced to no more than three years. He plans to appeal.

"It ain't over, baby," Ridings said to Whitley as they exited the courtroom. "It's just starting."

Binkley, 37, the former teacher, was convicted Sept. 29 in Sumner County on two counts of statutory rape by an authority figure.

The convictions stemmed from a sexual encounter that occurred on March 20, 2008, between Binkley and a 17-year-old boy in a locker room office at Portland High School.

Binkley claimed she was raped.

Before her sentencing, Binkley, clad in a striped jail jumpsuit, apologized for the harm she has caused.

"As I sit here today incarcerated, I have to believe something good can come of this," Binkley said.

The judge said it didn't matter if the children involved were 7 or 17, they were entitled to protection at school.

Binkley, who has been in Sumner County Jail since the verdict, will serve a little less than four years before she is eligible for parole.

12 years for a 17 year old? I understand that she was a teacher in a position of authority but 12 years seems like an excessive amount. It's not like she infected him with the gay or anything.

Age of consent is 18 across the board in Tennessee. She should have picked another state. Bad that it was a teacher and student, but the dude was 17. She should lose her ability to ever teach anywhere, ever again. But that should be the end of it.

I want to know seriously why these seem to be increasing in number. Especially since you would think the fact that they are getting so much press would be a deterrent. These are obviously intelligent women with other options; it must be some sort of psychosis.

Laws don't mean shit when it comes to sex crimes. You can't legislate physical desire. Religions have tried it and look what they got...more babies and more priests who can't control themselves.

It's a good question, though. Did these things happen at the same rate 50 years ago and were just swept under the rug? Why has it become so frequent in the past 10-15 years?

School bus driver in sex case out on $20,000 bond

A Fulton County school bus driver accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student was released from jail Thursday night on $20,000 bond, jail officials said.

Jacqueline Connally, 22, was arrested Wednesday night at her home in Union City, according to Allison Toller, spokeswoman for the school district. She had been charged with sexual battery, but the charge was changed to sexual assault by Fulton Magistrate Judge James Altman during a hearing late Thursday morning at the Fulton County Jail.

Altman said the felony sexual assault charge was lodged against Connally because she held a supervisory position over the student as a bus driver.

In addition to setting the bond at $20,000, Altman ordered that Connally have no unsupervised contact with anyone under age 18. A preliminary hearing for Connally was scheduled for Nov. 12 in Fulton Superior Court.

Connally, in her second year as a driver for Fulton, was fired after the school district learned of her previous relationship with a male student who rode her bus.

The male student attends Langston Hughes High School in Fairburn. Another student told school personnel about the relationship, Toller said.

The boy, who is 17 now, was 16 at the time of the relationship and Connally was 21.

The age of consent in Georgia is 16, but state law says a person can be charged with a sex crime if he or she has supervisory or disciplinary authority over the person involved in the relationship.

The school system also contacted DFCS.

I don't think these are increasing in number, only th ereporting of them is increasing.

Hell, anyone remember the Drew Carey episode where he went to his band instructor's funeral. He admitted he had slept with her when he was in high school, and it turned out that nearly every band nerd had?

It isn't new or increasing, imo.

All my teachers were older ladies in their 50's so I'm glad they weren't after me

Now all the hot chicks that I went to school with are teachers, so....
