So, would you work on your resume or look for a job at work?

Well, a while back i saw a co-worker working on a resume. Not too long ago, i saw the same co-worker looking at Career Builder. This was in plain sight, anyone walking by can see. I'm thinking, no way i would do this. What about you?

Re: So, would you work on your resume or look for a job at work?

It's hard sometimes to keep it completely on the down low. I can remember working at a place where the dress code was casual. Everytime someone would come in wearing a shirt and tie, it was a given that they were heading to a job interview over their lunch break. That's a little different, in that it wasn't on (their current) company time. The circumstances you described go over the line a little if you ask me.

I've worked on my resume at work. I think everyone should keep one updated, and as I get new responsibilities, duties, or certifications, I add 'em in.

Re: So, would you work on your resume or look for a job at work?

^ I could see doing work on your resume. I think going to job sites is probably over the line. That being said, I know I did it at one of my old jobs when I was really unhappy.

I've worked on my resume and searched for new jobs while at work, but it's always been for positions within the company.

Noooooooo... I would never do such a thing. What a completely shocking lack of respect for the fine faceless corporation that cuts your paycheck!

Re: So, would you work on your resume or look for a job at work?

I wouldn't do it unless I were trying to get fired. It's not a respect issue, it's just something I wouldn't want my superiors to be able to hold against me.

I've worked on resumes, searched jobs and even faxed out resumes at work. It was a pretty lax company though.

I wouldn't do it in plain sight, but if it's on the down low, BFD. Just don't get caught doing it.

Re: So, would you work on your resume or look for a job at work?

When I was in my previous position for the company I work with, I prepared my resume at home and saved it on a flash drive to take to work to print. That was the extent of me working on my resume at work.

As for looking for jobs at work? No way! Not the way they monitor websites we visit. Even the "careers" section on MSNBC.com is blocked. I can't even read news stories at work about jobs let alone search for one. Those sites are blocked and management gets a print out of what blocked sites we try to visit.

I am not 100% certain careerbuilder.com is blocked by my job, but I know it's in the paperwork we sign that says we won't visit those sites at work.

Re: So, would you work on your resume or look for a job at work?

I once told the guy I was working for that I had to take the afternoon off, because I had a job interview.

He couldn't fire me. I was the only one there who knew how to finish the order we were working on.

Wow! I don't think I have ever heard of a company being that restrictive with Internet usage, especially to the point where there are websites listed in a contract or employee agreement. It makes sense, though. I've never worked at a job that blocked any websites. I'm not so foolish as to think that web traffic wasn't monitored, but nothing was blocked or explicitly restricted, except pornography.

Re: So, would you work on your resume or look for a job at work?

I worked at a job that allowed us unrestricted access to the internet, due to the nature of our work (employment verifications), but would hassle us if we went to websites that didn't appear to be related to any of the applications we were verifying. So every few weeks I'd get warned about not using DVD Talk, and would then go back to using it again.

I won't as long as my company promises not to look for my replacement while I am still here.

I've done interviews with prospective employers at my current job.

Told the boss to get out and mind his own business when he started getting nosey about things.

Most of us only really 'work' 10% of the day.

Ethically speaking, it is wrong to use company resources for your own career pursuits.

I did agressively job hunt at work once when I knew that I was going be laid off soon. Screw em. Even my boss told me that it wouldn't hurt his feelings if we started job hunting. The company was being sold out.

Re: So, would you work on your resume or look for a job at work?

If you're thinking about going for a promotion or somewhere within the same company, then by all means update your resume at work. I actually have a copy of my resume on my PC from when I considered another job within the company. That makes it easier to get it to the correct person in a timely manner.

However, if you are looking elsewhere, I don't think that's appropriate. In terms of looking for another job with another company at work, I don't see a problem with it if you do it on your lunch break or even use a company PC. As long as it is on your own time. Applying for another job on that company's computer, that's a bit too risky.
