Can you set the car to explode if someone tries to start it?

Put a Lojack on your car or something. Hopefully they are dumb enough to come and take your car. They will lead you right to your stuff.

Re: House was broken into today
If someone steals the car, the police can track it to their hideout, where they have stashed the stolen loot. Sorry to hear about you house being broken into, I have had it done twice to me and had my car broken into.

Re: House was broken into today
You might hit the local pawn shops. Police continue to recover some of my parents stuff from pawn shops. My parents had serial numbers for everything and provided that for police. And pawn shops are required to check serial numbers, so some things have turned up. Just recently they recovered their laptop.

Re: House was broken into today
Any chance you have the serial numbers on the items they took? Cops can use that to enter that info into the national computer system and if someone else (PD depts that is) runs that serial number it will show up as stolen. Also it would help because most agencies maintain a pawn database where pawnshops have to report all that they take in with pawners infor and item description with serial numbers if abailiable.

Do you have serial numbers for things? Cops pawn shops records.

Re: House was broken into today
Sorry to hear that. My last apartment was broken into back in 2001. It happened while myself and my two roommates were at work. They stole my Playstation and games and a large boombox with a ton of cds. They also ransacked my room taking cash and credit cards. I was 110% positive that it was the crackhead tenants living below us on the second floor. The police said that they would talk to them if I wanted them to but they didn't recommend it because it might make the situation worse. Nothing was ever recovered. Worst fucking feeling in the world.
Mentally, I don't think I ever really recovered. Once I learned that it could actually happen to me, it shook me up big time. Typically these days someone is pretty much always at home now. If there are any periods where the house will be empty for more than 10-15 minutes, the tv goes on at a high volume and the door gets deadbolted. I also try to silently creep out of the house in case anyone is watching. I'm a paranoid bastard.

Re: House was broken into today
Our neighbor's house was broken into today. The neighborhood watch is going to meet tomorrow to discuss options. The thought is to get a camera up in the street to keep tabs on cars that come in and out of neighborhoods.
I would definitely think about starting up/joining your local neighborhood watch, having neighbors help you and vice versa is great (we had 3 messages on our home phone from different neighbors calling and explaining what happened when we got home today). Also, It might be a good idea for more deterants, such as security signs etc. |

Re: House was broken into today
I got robbed about 20 months ago, they took my laptop, portable dvd player, and stuck them in my backpack (was off work that day left backpack in apartment, left with dad to run errands)
I changed all my online passwords, 99% of the files were backed up to a portable hard drive (which they didn't take)... there was a $100 portable cd player in the backpack, with checkbook (changed account), about $100 in gift cards... there is only 1 pawn shop here locally but about 5 or 6 within 50 miles, I had the serial number for the laptop but never got it back. I always keep my cash and credit cards on me. Never leave them behind.

Re: House was broken into today
Yep, people who break into houses and get shot by the owners have NO sympathy from me. If you are one of those who has been robbed, you "get" how I feel about that.

Tarantino, did you recently break up with the hot Asian chick that used to be in your avatar photo? If so, maybe this is her way of getting revenge.

Re: House was broken into today
You have my sympathies as well. My house was broken into over the 2008 Christmas break, and I discovered my house was ransacked when I returned home from visiting family out-of-state. This year, I'm thinking about staying in-state, and skipping the holiday visit, and perhaps visiting at another time. In my case, somehow the burglars were able to gain entry through a back bedroom window (while no windows were broken). I have since addressed that issue.
Since I also take a lot of photos, I was able to supply my insurance company with many photos to substantiate claims of stolen items (plus, I tend to hold on to the boxes of all my electronics, so I had serial numbers from the boxes), and I also used my online DVD collection statement to claim the titles that were stolen. How this affected me? I don't buy as much stuff anymore, the transient nature of ownership dawned on me after having so much stuff stolen in one fell swoop. I replaced some cheap HD DVDs, but I didn't replace hardly any of the DVDs that were stolen. But they may have done me a favor by stealing my 50" plasma TV since I was able to replace it with a much larger 67" DLP LED-light engine model. It'll take some months before you feel "normal" again when you come home in the evenings. Though I still get that uneasy feeling just before I open the door to my home when I return home from work. Do what you have to do to feel "safe and secure" in your home. Good luck with the insurance claim.

On the break-in, sorry to hear about it. You need to invest in a security system or a dog, also back in the states I always had my gun but worried about coming home to a robbery, so I would suggest getting a carry license. This is my plan. Also to Graftenberg: I hope you sent the tape to all the local news stations, maybe one would play it and you could get an ID. Take them to small claims for a new door and you will probably help out others who have been robbed. |

Re: House was broken into today
no, she's still my GF.I definitely don't feel normal walking into my house now after work. I check and double check every lock now, all the time. I also find myself walking outside more than I used to and peering through windows too. I'm very paranoid. I also haven't had the urge to replace anything. They missed my Blu-ray stash, but took my PS3, so I can't play them. I was thinking of just selling my Blu's and not replacing the PS3.

Re: House was broken into today
I think you would be better off doing this,
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMP-...5736880&sr=1-1 It is 142 now but was 128. Are you turning in an insurance claim? Do you have replacement cost? If you have replacement cost, then remember they "generally" only pay you the full amount once you replace the item. Lets use your PS3 for example; lets forget deductibles right now but of course you will have to consider that. But if it cost $350 to replace your PS3 today the insurance company may only pay you $200 or so based on age and condition. If you do not have replacement cost than this is "all" you get. If you have replacement cost than you would get $200 now and then a 2nd payment of $150 IF you spent $350 on the new player. If you decide to not replace the player, than you would not get a 2nd payment at all. Or if you only spend say $275 because you found a deal, than the 2nd payment would be $75. Those are just round numbers for an example. And your policy or state may be different. The big key of course is if you have the replacement cost coverage. Also, don't think your going to "score" as electronics have come down so much in price (so you assume insurance will pay you would you paid for them). What the insurance pays you is not based on what you paid for an item, but what it can be purchased for today. Again, YMMV....just examples and illustrations. If your turning in a claim, just talk to your agent or adjuster for details. |

Re: House was broken into today
That really sucks, man. Sorry to hear about your loss.
I have a pretty big fear of burglary. My apartment got "broken into" when I first moved in here about 12 years ago. (I didn't lock the back door, which is why I put it in quotes.) I suspected it was somebody I knew personally because they took a credit card and went to a mall that I know they shopped at all the time and bought $1500.00 in gift cards and they also rented videos from a video store I set an account up at when I was with him one time. The same bastard set up a fraudulent Direct TV account in my name too, but denied it all when I confronted him about it. But that's nothing like what you experienced. I don't know what I'd do if I experienced something like that...it would drive me crazy. My uncle and his wife had their house broken into when I was a kid and somebody shot their dog and that always bothered me. And I knew somebody who had an apartment on the third floor and somebody kicked in their door and took off with the TV before the neighbor could call the police. I live in the same apartment...second floor...and it does give me some kind of sense of security knowing that most apartment break ins occur on the first floor and around here it tends to be somebody the tenants know. As long as I've lived here, I've never known about one random break in. It's always been a situation where somebody knew the person...an ex trying to get revenge, or some kids who knew the family had game systems or whatever. I have to say my fear of this really makes me reluctant to buy a house. And stories like this don't help!

However, if you happen to live in a smaller city or town, with a good crime lab system, DNA is typically done on residential burglaries. During a typical month, I work about 5 - 10 B&Es. Hell, in a lot of them, nothing is actually even stolen. Just the B&E is enough to get DNA testing. |
