Re: House was broken into today
Sorry to hear about the break-in.
About 21 years ago, I had my old apartment robbed - and it was by someone I knew, but couldn't prove it to the police. They too came and dusted for fingerprints, and that was about it. They also went to the guy's house who I knew that did it, but said they couldn't do anything unless they saw one of my items laying on the floor next to his feet when he opened up the front door. My apartment wasn't ransacked, he knew where to find all the "good" stuff. It was a "neat and clean" robbery and I didn't even notice until I happened to look up on top of my TV when I came home and saw my VCR gone! But I believe in karma and I know he got his in the end. And I totally understand that feeling of "violation" and home not feeling like "home" anymore. I moved out of that apartment about three months later. I've also been mugged too, by two kids that came out of nowhere and shoved me off of my bicycle and grabbed my backpack and made a run for it. I got my backpack back - which was found floating in a canal nearby by someone walking their dog a day or so later. All they took was my ATM card, $5 out of my wallet, and this mini-TV I had in there. They left all the expensive computer software and other stuff! I only hope those two guys got killed in a drive-by - I hate to say. I was bruised from head to toe from the fall I took off of my bike when they shoved me off. I'm female by the way.

That's a drag. I've been lucky so far, as have my parents.

My sympathy is with you... I'm sorry to hear about this Tarantino. I know I'd be heartbroken to lose all my things. It's good that you have insurance though.

Sorry man. Was robbed 4 years ago (pretty sure it was my roommate). Stole my laptop and Nintendo DS. It feels really shitty...I know.

I only specified that I was female just in case some of the guys on here wonder why I had let two guys shove me off of my bike and run off with my backpack.

Re: House was broken into today
Little tip: Those $30 locks on your front door are quite easy to pick. (and with no proof of forced entry)
If you invest in a security system, invest in a lock that prevents 'key bumping' It takes seconds:

Re: House was broken into today
Could you tell how they got in? My friends got robbed when a 2nd-story window was left partially open- someone climbed up to it and got in. I usually think like a thief to protect my stuff. I haven't heard of any burglaries where I live, in fact a few months ago I got woken up by the cops after they caught some guy trying to break into a neighboring apartment. They asked if there was anyone by a certain name living here, since 'the guy we have in custody' said he was there to see someone who didn't exist.
I did have my CAR stolen a couple years ago though- the police were totally incompetent then. Nobody bothered coming out when I called to report it stolen. It turned out whoever stole it just joyrided it around then broke almost everything inside it before parking it in a neighborhood- where the police gave it a PARKING TICKET before realizing it was a stolen car! I wrote an angry letter to the city government and got a reply saying basically "uh, we're sorry?" Is there an easy way to test your locks to see if they're 'bumpable'? I want to try breaking into my place that way, and get the lock replaced if it works. |

Wow, I love the questions in that lock bumping video "Could this be used to break into a house?"

Re: House was broken into today
I wondered the same thing, but just assumed that my lock would be susceptible. Unless it was specifically purchased as un-bumpable, it's likely not. I suppose you could order a bump key to try it yourself, or buy a blank and make one.

Re: House was broken into today
So last night I noticed that when they cleaned out my room, they also took the spare key to my car. Now I have to go and get the whole car re-keyed, which is going to be expensive as hell.
Those fucking bastards.

Re: House was broken into today
Almost all locks not sold as intentionally UNBUMPABLE are at risk. There are a few very popular locks that are considered not bumpable (and nearly impossible to pick) in the sense that they are much more complicated internally. Medeco brand (newest generation) is one but can cost over $120.
There are some gimmicks out there to claim you can make your lock 'unbumpable' but I doubt they work 100% all the time.

Re: House was broken into today
Also don't forget that they may have seen account numbers and passwords.
And did you have any other spare keys; parents, etc ?

Re: House was broken into today
No other spare keys. And no passwords or anything like that - luckily. When they took my PS3, it has my account info on there, so technically they could have bought a bunch of stuff on the PSN, but I changed that password and removed the billing info when I got home.
I can't even sleep at night.

Re: House was broken into today
Man, that sucks.
RE: Bumpable locks... I recently got locked out of my place when my girlfriend left with both sets of apartment keys on a business trip and had to have a locksmith come out and get me in. He bumped the lock and it took about 10 seconds for him to get in. lol.

Re: House was broken into today
Shouldn't admit this, but I'm still using the same dresser from when I was in elementary school.

This is what happened to my coworker. It's best if you're not home during the break in...

Re: House was broken into today
After getting my home broken into I installed security cameras and come home one day to find that someone attempted to kick in my front door. Went through my camera footage to find these two assholes:
This was back in June and the cops have the video but I have never heard anything back on this and unless they are caught breaking into another home I don't expect to.
