Re: House was broken into today

That sucks, did the cops dust for prints? I've always been curious why they do or don't. I assume your electronics added up to a fair amount, but if they didn't, I wonder if it's because they don't want to or because they know the insurance company will pay for it.

I got an alarm system for my place quickly after I bought it. It hurts to lay out the cash for sensors on every window, door, etc., but it's worth it for the peace of mind. FWIW, Brinks (now Broadview) has been stellar when it comes to support. Easy to change the direct debit, emergency password, but most of all, they've called quickly each and every time my stupid ass trips the alarm by accident. And you want that call, if they don't get you, the cops come out and you have to pay for a false alarm call.

Re: House was broken into today

cops don't do much if no one was hurt. one time, my family was on vacation when i was younger, a homeless asked for money, asked to take a picture with the family, and robbed my dad in broad daylight. we had the picture of the perpetrator, the cops didn't give a rats ass. well, they took a report, but that's it.

Re: House was broken into today

I'm sorry to hear about the break in. I have never experienced one but last year one of my friend's and a former coworker had their homes broken into. My friend lives about a mile away from me. He and his stepbrother were living in a house owned by a relative. Mostly electronics stuff was taken. My friend only had his XBox and TV stolen. His stepbrother had his laptop, digital camera, video camera, XBox and some audio equipment taken. My former coworker had jewelry, tv, dvd player, kitchen appliances and some of her kids' electronics were taken.

I doubt very seriously that they would run a DNA screen to catch a residential burglar.

OMG...my folks house got broken into a couple months ago while they were out of town. Son discovered and we called the police. House was completely trashed (but not damaged except for the broken window). Anyway the cop asked if I could stay around while he called in a "CSI". I immediately got a picture of CSI Miami with super cool hot looking peeps with super high tech gadgets.

Yea, no so much...LOL....so old guy who probably got demoted to the job showed up with literally one of those very small plastic tackle boxes that are like $1.99 at Walmart. He opened it up and all he had was a bunch of those duster brush things, that black powder stuff and tape. He walked the house with me and any time I pointed out that something was moved, he would say "nope won't be able to get finger prints off that". And about every 10th item, he would try to get prints.

Never heard from them again...LOL

Sorry to hear about that man.
Not to freak you out more but if your credit card info was on your 360 or ps3 it can be used to download games and points. You should contact people on your friends list and see if you've signed on since the incident.
I've heard that happen plenty of times in other threads like these.

They did have an evidence team come dust for prints. She said it looked like they were wearing gloves though. She left her black dust all over the Xbox they broke and my dresser.

And I'll definitely be getting an alarm system.

I think you dropped a '0' there.

Seriously, that sucks bigtime. I hope they catch the f'ers (thru online game console use--better than the PD forensics squad!) and that insurance covers stuff. Must be weird living in a place after it's been broken into. I've heard that from several people.

Re: House was broken into today

Your photo looks like my scene back in '95. They ran off with my sock drawer with a trail of socks all the way through the back yard. My nice landlord actually made me a new drawer that matched my crappy dresser. Anyway, that violated feeling is horrible. Hope it doesn't last long.

Sounds better than what I got. They sent a uniform officer out to take the report. She was just about to leave when I asked about fingerprints (hoping that they would be sending someone out). She said that she could try and came back in with the same $1.99 tacklebox that you mentioned. She dusted in one place and lifted one print with lifting tape. Watching her do it made me fairly certain that that was probably her second or third time ever doing it.

Re: House was broken into today

I'm afraid we are going to see a big rise in this type of crime as the economy gets worse. It sucks.

I was a victim once. I spelt in on a Sunday morning and finally went outside around 1pm. I was just numb to see that my car window had been smashed, and sure enough, assholes ripped out my nice MP3 player that I had recently bought and installed. They stole all my cds and went through my glove box. I had to drive around with no music or radio, and it pissed me off. The cops didn't even bother coming out. Then it was a big hassle to get the window replaced because the power windows was malfunctioning.

You need one of these:
Mexican Lion

We have an indoor 80lb Rott mix. I doubt anyone's going to try much at our house.

Re: House was broken into today

Sorry to hear this. It happened to me about a year ago and although it feels creepy now, you'll feel OK in a few day.

It's just weird knowing that a stranger has been rifling through your room. They took all of my jewelry, including my class ring, that hurt the most.
