Help! My House Key is Stuck in My Front Door Lock!

Ran in to a bit of a dilemma this afternoon. I was on my way out of the house, and while locking the door, the key jammed. Not so much were I can fiddle around with it, but the key is stuck in this position and I can't move it to take it out. I have no idea what happened. I turned it right, which locked the door, then when bringing it back down to the bottom to remove it, it got stuck. This is what it looks like now:

This is a different setup then your typical bedroom doorknob so I have absolutely no idea how to take this thing apart. I'm afraid the lock is broken too. The only screws I even see are on the side of the door where the lock itself pops in and out.. I can look the door from the inside now but a lot of good that will do me if some guy sees the key in my lock and tries breaking in.

Suggestions?

I don't have money for a locksmith. I rent a room out in a house. My roommate is the owner/landlord but he's out of town until tomorrow night.

I'm in Sacramento.

Well, you can try to get some WD-40 (or comparable) into the lock carefully to see if whatever is jammed up will work itself loose. If that doesn't work, I would think you will need to find some money for a locksmith.

This may or may not work for you, but I had a key jam once and my dad told me to wrap a cold compress around it for about 5-10 minutes... you know, one of those freezer bags you put on sore muscles. Supposedly, it makes the metal expand as it gets cold and pushes away whatever is holding it in place, then it returns to normal size as it cools and you can just pull it out.

It sucked to just stand there with a compress around the key for 10 minutes, but it worked. The key came right out.

Shrinks. Metal shrinks when cooled.

I guess that's why I'm not a physics teacher. I'd probably blow up the lab.

It still worked though, so it might be worth a try.

It worked!

I didn't even think to use that. I had some in the garage so I gave it a whirl and the key popped out.. lock also seems to be working (for the time being). That was bizarre.

Thanks for the help, guys!

It's a good idea to put graphite in older locks, or locks that tend to be tight..

They make powder graphite at any Lowes or etc that has a small nozzle, you can squeeze some in a lock and it will smooth out the mechanisms in there.

The graphite is dry and will not tend to 'gom up'(highly technical term) the works in there with residues and dust/dirt clumping like a WD40 would over time.

Agreed. WD-40 is not something you want to use in a lock over and over again.

Re: Help! My House Key is Stuck in My Front Door Lock!

If it gets stuck again another solution is to take a hammer and give the key a good whack straight down the axis of the tumbler. Do not hit it at an angle or you may bend it. This will dislodge any stuck pins.

That was probably the first helpful advice in the history of Otter.

Didn't think of WD-40? And you call yourself a man?

Remember these two rules:

1) If it moves and shouldn't, use duct-tape.

2) If it doesn't move and should, use WD-40.

Anything that can't be fixed with this advice isn't broken.

Implode. You'd implode the lab.
