Who the heck do I see about owing back taxes?

I owe some back taxes and think I'll be needing a lawyer to clean this mess up, but everything solicitation I get in the mail or every ad in the phone book seems to contradict the other ads.

Don't call a lawyer, they work for the IRS!
Don't call someone who used to work for the IRS, they worked for the IRS!
Don't call them, they're not lawyers or former IRS agents!

So, ugh, who the heck am I supposed to contact about this kind of thing? I don't want to get dicked over any more than I already am. What do I need to look for?

Listen to your common sense more than an unsolicited advertisement.

Re: Who the heck do I see about owing back taxes?

get a tax lawyer

someone i see once or twice a year works for a tax lawyer and i was talking to her this weekend. they always get clients who hide millions of $$ in cash in their home, declare $50,000 a year in income or less, buy million dollar houses thinking the IRS won't find out they pay $75000 a year in interest and then wonder how they get caught

Who do you owe the back taxes to? State, Federal?

Call them up and I bet they're willing to work with you. If you don't have the money now they can set up a payment plan. Don't expect it to be painless but it's better than the alternative.

If you are acknowleding that you owe the back taxes, simply call and ask for a payment plan. They will tell you that penalties and interest will apply, but I don't think any lawyer will get you out of paying them.

That's what I'm hoping. There's no way I can get out and in front of this at this point...

Re: Who the heck do I see about owing back taxes?

My taxes were really messed up because I'd separated from my husband...it was a mess, I didn't even know what I'd filed in a number of years.

I went to a CPA/tax attorney. It was kind of expensive, but worth it to do a complete clean up.
