YARET - How long will it take me to mow my lawn?

I'm currently in the market for a house, and shortly thereafter, a lawn mower.

It's been a long time since I mowed my parents' yard and I'm struggling to recall the time it took. Are there good rules of thumb for hours/acre for a push mower and a standard riding mower? (assume a level yard with no obstacles)

And the bit in the middle about how everyone should keep their clothes on? Wow, just WOW, that's all I have to say." -Otto

Re: YARET - How long will it take me to mow my lawn?

I have a .55 acre yard, basically no trees, but is a trapezoid shape due to the cul de sac.

I may will take about 2 hours on average using a 22" walk-behind. This is with a quick trim and blowing clean the sidewalks. This will vary depending on length of grass, water content, and whether or not I edge.

My parents had 2.25 acres growing up, and a riding moer (say 42-48" I don't recall) took about 2.5 hours to mow. This did not include trimming around trees.

It takes me about 90 seconds to write a check and hand it over to the lawn guy.

I can cut about 7000 sq. ft in about an hour but I do not bag, I use a mulcing mower and let the clippings drop.

Re: YARET - How long will it take me to mow my lawn?

I have about 1/3 of an acre. Takes me about 45-50 minutes if I'm not bagging it. But that means I have to do it weekly or it's too long to leave on the grass. If I have to bag it I usually fill 5 lawn bags which costs me $10 to have picked up ($2 sticker per bag).

The bigger the blade, the faster it goes. Less passes you have to make.

I think I am reaching the income level where it would be "cheaper" for me to hire somebody to mow for me.

I probably won't though.

You're right, I should be able to do it quicker than 90 seconds.

It takes me about seven minutes, but I could fit all of my grass from my "yard" in my kitchen and dining room.

Re: YARET - How long will it take me to mow my lawn?

Cutting the grass can be nice exercise, but sometimes it has to be done at the least convenient times.

I've considered paying to have it done, but to be quite honest, I can't see spending $30 a go for something that takes me under an hour to do. Plus I can't be sure the money is going into someone's hands who is actually supposed to be in this country.

2.5 acres of lawn, Kubota tractor/mower, 2 hours. Doesn't include trimming. Trimming takes another 40 minutes.

It can be a chore at times but I enjoy it as well. ~7500 sq ft and I cut, bag, and trim in about an hour.

It's good down time so you can think about stuff while you mow.

in a standard riding mower, it'd probably take me less than 90 seconds to mow my lawn.

Re: YARET - How long will it take me to mow my lawn?

When I was a kid, a friend down the street would take an entire day to mow his front lawn. He would take an extended break in between each row he mowed.

He had a power mower, and could easily have finished the whole job in no more than half an hour, including the edging and hedge trimming.

But instead he procrastinated and wasted a whole day, pretty much every Saturday.

Re: YARET - How long will it take me to mow my lawn?

We mowed yards as kids. I always wanted to get an early start in the morning and try to beat the summer heat but a friend preferred getting a second helping of breakfast while he watched television. It never failed that he would not feel well in the heat and we would finish mowing the yards without him. I think he still got a share of the money when it was divided up amongst us.
