Our DVD player is broken... fire the nanny?

Alright otters, put aside that knee-jerk reaction and help me think through this. My son's nanny was watching him this morning and I went to the home office to work for one hour. I came back and found her, as usual, parked on the sofa doing a crossword puzzle. I found my son toddling around. I found the entertainment stand glass door open (and I KNOW I shut it this morning, for a fact). Our 5 disc DVD player was open with two DVDs flung on the floor, one of which was the rental we need to return, another DVD was covered in food where she didn't clean his face and hands after feeding him cereal (Bladerunner, my husband's gonna die!), the fourth one came out fine--I was barely able to reach it, but it is nice and unscratched so that's cool. The fifth DVD is still stuck in there. I can't get it out. The carousel won't turn to get it out.

The nanny says oh well it's time to put a lock on that entertainment stand, like it's MY fault!

There are other issues with her. Last week my husband had to take the toilet completely apart and pull something out of the bottom of it that she dropped down there.

So what say you?

It's pretty obvious.

Fire her? Only if by that you mean "put her in front of a firing squad".

if she's this careless about inanimate objects, imagine what she does during the day to your child.

This isn't even a question. I would have fired her right after the "time to put a lock" comment, if not before.

I'm so non-confrontational, I wanted to fire her right there on the spot. I need a backbone.

She's like 65 years old and doesn't wear a bra under her mumu, you sure you want pics?

The answer is obvious.

What else is your baby getting into and the nanny isn't noticing?

Scary thought.

she's 65 - so you get what you pay for.

I wouldn't expect her running after your kids at that age -

I would count my blessings that she gets up from that couch alive every day

With my nanny, I told her that she can clean all the apartment but stay away from my entertainment center - don't dust it, don't wipe it, don't touch it. That's my baby and I clean it. Plus you wouldn't want someone else cleaning a tv most likely with windex or water...

Just tell your nanny not to allow your child to play with that area.

Yeah, that comment seems out of place. Was the cabinet in her view while on the couch? If she could see the cabinet, and didn't stop the kid from going inside and messing with electronics because she was preoccupied or apathetic, that's a clear case to fire her - that's neglect in my opinion.

If the cabinet was out of her view, and the child got in there anyway and caused damage, that's still bad, but not necessarily fireable in my opinion unless there's a pattern of neglect.

She was the clear choice over the blonde 19-year-old Swedish au pair.

BTW, you can take the casing off the DVD player (usually 4-6 screws around the edges) to free the stuck DVD.

I also can't believe that you discovered the carnage, and she either didn't notice or didn't bother cleaning up (nevermind stopping it before it happened).
