Brothels in Nevada losing business due to high fuel prices

Brothels in Nevada losing business due to high fuel prices

RENO (AP) - Rising fuel prices are putting a pinch on the world's oldest profession.

According to industry officials, Nevada brothels that cater to long-haul truckers are offering gas cards and other promotions after experiencing business declines of up to 25% from a year ago.

Geoffrey Arnold of the Nevada Brothel Owners' Association says truckers account for as much as 75% of business at the state's rural brothels along Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 95.

He says business is down about 19% at his two northern Nevada brothels along I-80: Donna's Ranch in Wells and Donna's Battle Mountain Ranch.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, diesel fuel costs roughly $4.70 a gallon, up 67.5% from a year ago.

Of Nevada's 28 legal brothels, Arnold says 16 are located in rural areas that are being hurt by truckers' higher diesel costs.

Whorehouses closer to Reno and Las Vegas, which rely more on tourists and convention-goers, report business is up this year.
I guess they were right when they say high gas prices effect everything.

If business is down, he can either reduce his prices or improve the services he offers. The result will be prettier girls for lower prices. So, in this case, increased gas prices are good for the consumer.

So they can afford to drop $1000+ on a whore but high gas prices are chasing them away? That does not make sense.

On the radio this morning, they mentioned this story. They also interviewed a guy in a rural area who was talking about all of his financial problems due to the rising costs of gas -- problems paying bills, wife had to take a second job, etc. But then, the guy mentioned that he had started to carpool with 3 or 4 other people from his job. This means that he's actually paying a lot less on gas than before the prices rose!

Long haul truckers are having to but back on luxuries.

Just like every one else.

Luxuries? According to Maslow hookers are on the lowest level of the hierarchy of needs...

Maybe they can use their "economic stimulus" payments for this. At least the money would be going to a home grown industry.

Do lot lizards still cost the same? If so, there really isn't a problem for the truckers.

Okay, I'm not up on the high cost of whoring, but are you guys kidding? I would have suspected something like $250. Seems like I posted a thread about whores on Craigslist in Portland getting busted or something and they were well under $1,000. In fact, they were closer to $150 I thought.

The most you'll pay in Liberty City is $75, but it's far more cost effective to pay $1 and suck down a vendor's nuts.

I was working with a man who's been a reporter in Las Vegas for many years and he was saying that normally Las Vegas/Nevada is recession proof because people like gambling no matter how good or bad the economy is. He said over the last few months there's been a clear drop in gamblers and tourists.

Could that be less about the recession and more about the Internet and/or local casinos cropping up all over the country?

I doubt the internet is a recent thing for them since the Feds cut internet gambling down to a crawl. Likely it is just gas and the apparent price of whores.

Vegas probably gets a huge of amount of visitors from SoCal, particularly 20-somethings, and many of them probably drive, so if gas prices are high, Vegas will take a hit.

Lap dances are still $20 though.
