Ever been a host family for an "au pair"?
Or know a family that has done this? I have a friend from Colombia who joined one of these programs (EF Cultural Care Au Pair) and is scheduled to spend a year with a family in Washington DC (well providing she gets her visa at the US embassy in Bogota on thursday...). I was wondering what the experience was like for the family.
This is the program my friend joined: http://www.culturalcare.ca/default.aspx |

Sounds like fun, I'll let her know.
![]() Funny chat with her yesterday on MSN: Her: Their (the family) religion is "agnostic", what is "agnostic"? Are they bad people? Me: Yes, they worship Satan and do human sacrifices in their basement. Her: ![]() Me: that's a joke. It means thay are skeptical about the existence of God.Her: They don't believe in God! They don't go to church! ![]() Me: Not exactly. They are not 100% certain that god exists, but they might choose to believe in god and might also follow some religion. Her: I don't understand. Me: Do you know what an atheist is? Her: Yes. Me: Ok so agnostics are like in between atheists and religious people. Her: I don't understand. Me: They just can't make up their fucking mind about god or religion. Just be thankful you won't end up with some Christian fundamentalist nutjobs. Her: Why? Me: Nevermind ![]() Now this conversation is going on in Spanish. My spanish is decent but trying to explain something like agnosticism to someone in spanish is another story... I finally found a wiki page in spanish on agnosticism and went "here, read this." ![]() |

I've seen a lot of good movies that are based on this premise

My sister and her husband have an au pair. It wouldn't surprise me if that douche tried to bang her.

Oh well, my friend's visa was denied. She got the typical canned response "After spending a year in the #1 country in the world we see no reason why you would want to return to a shithole like Colombia, so DENIED!".
(Sarcasm added for effect) ![]() Now considering how big an issue illegal immigration is in the US, this is not that surprising. It must be extremely difficult for anyone from central or south america to get a visa. |
