Dental Woes

So I'm munching on some Jelly Bellies and CRACK!. I feel porceline mixing with the soft candy. I pulled a freakin' crown out! This is gonna cost me $600+ to get fixed because a#$hole dentists can never replace the same crown, they always "have" to make a new one! Mother F*$king dentists!

And what if I wait until after the holidays? There's no pain... but there is even more chance that the crown won't fit because of changes to the tooth since the crown fell off.

I'm sorry if anyone here is a dentist. I don't mean to insult... I've just never had a good dental experience... last time I was on the fence for something like $6k... and I was hoping that I wouldn't have to take out a loan for my teeth for a long time.

Can't, or won't? If they won't because they are afraid it won't stay or whatever, you need to look for a new dentist.

Every time I have ever lost a permanent crown, the dentist has always told me that they can not replace the existing crown. This has happened with multiple dentists at various stages of life... and yes... I have bad teeth (if that wasn't already apparent). I'm about to try out another new dentist because I was just added to my wife's insurance... so we'll see. Luckily we have a health care reserve account (I had forgotten that part) so at least it will be all tax-free.

Call up available dentists and ask them who, besides themselves, the would recommend for the job. If any particular dentist gets more than one recommendation, go with that one.

Otherwise, go with the dentist who seems to know the most about other dentists in the area. They are keeping up with things.

My old dentist and the new dentist who bought his practice (when he retired) both typically clean it up and reseat it with new glue.

That assumes neither the tooth nor the crown have been damaged by chewing, and the fit is still good at the margins (where it meets the tooth). If it is "no go," they show me why. I'd say the vast majority (80%?) of the time, they reseat it, so your dentist may be jerking you around.

The old dentist reseated it free for life, basically saying it must be his fault. The new dentist charges $25 if it is more than one year old. Still beats $600 (actually, my dentist is WAY more.)

I've found that the good dentists in town like each other and refer to each other. People in general like other people with a similar work ethic. The first thing I was told about my dentist was, "She's expensive, but she does really good work." I've been happy with her work, and her referrals, for 17 years.
