How do you deal with annoying friends that won't leave you alone?

I have this friend that I am gradually getting more distant from. We started out great, hanging out a lot, basically good friend stuff. That was 1 year ago. Now I can hardly stand to be around him. It basically boiled down to a girl and a car coming between us. I got a new car about 4 months ago after my last one was totalled, and to him it's his "dream" car. It sounds stupid I know but it's just a Civic, and he's a total Hondaphile. He's been in a semi-serious relationship for the past 6 months, which I totally respect...i've even helped them through some hard times when they were close to breaking up over stupid reasons. He spends almost all his free time with her, which I also respect - falling off the face of the earth is understandable if you're in a relationship, but he constantly complains that I don't have time for him. I've gone out and cemented/pursued new friendships and for some reason it really bothers him. He acts like the center of the universe and his sense of entitlement never ends. However, he won't stop annoying me. I've tried time and time again to talk to him but he can also get very defensive and hostile - any time someone accuses him of doing something he turns it back around on them.

In other words...how can I get this guy to buzz off?

My first piece of advice is: don't make him "buzz off." Things like that always have a way of coming back to bite you in the ass.

I'd gradually let the contact fade, but be as polite and friendly as you can about it. "Oh, sorry man, I've gotta do [this] this weekend -- maybe some other time."

I tried to ditch a guy for years in high school. He was an annoying little runt. Turned out to be one of my best friends.

bang his girlfriend

or at least start hitting on her in an obvious way right in front of him - if he calls you on it, deny it. Eventually he will avoid you, problem solved.

Or alternatively, come on to him.

He'll leave skid marks exiting the room.

I think the OP has the Civic. Maybe they share the bunk beds?

Basically the same thing happened with a couple of my fiance's friends. In the end, she just stopped returning phone calls..and eventually the phone calls ended.

They too we're jealous that the fiance had found new friends (She pretty much had to find new friends, because her two former best friends, stopped calling her). So after several months in that period her friends pretty much stopped really being friends..and just did things together, the fiance went out and found new friends. Now when they found out that happened, they we're pissed because my fiance now, never had time for 'them'. SO they started to get all pissy, and the better half said, I don't drama, cya.

What's the annoying part?

Just stop calling him. Most friendships end over a lack of communication.

burning his house down wouldn't work, unless he knew you did it. he would ask to stay with you and that would create a bunch of new problems..

Yep, just don't return calls because you "got busy and forgot."

I ignore, plain and simple. I'll accept calls, but in decreasing frequency, until they just stop calling since I'm not available. Problem solved.

He's right you know. People come up to me on the street reporting other people. It's starting to wear on me. There's only so much I can do.
