Total Lunar Eclipse, Tuesday AM, 8/28

Early Tuesday morning, there is a total lunar eclipse. West ciasters get to see the whole thing, for the East Coast, the moon will set while in total eclipse. Totality is 5:52-7:22 AM EDT (but check local set time in newspaper or something).

If you look at it directly, how long does it take to fuck up your eyes?

It won't. Solar eclipses, where the moon passes in front of the sun, are dangerous to look at because you're still staring at the sun, even if most of its obscured. But with lunar eclipses you're only looking at the moon as it passes through Earth's shadow -- it's no more dangerous than looking at a full moon.

Total Lunar Eclipses are quite beautiful, it'll be interesting to see it the exact opposite way from the last one in March.

Actually, according to certain beliefs. Werewolves are at their most powerful during an eclipse. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I don't think you should even look above the horizon for the duration. You might be okay, yes. But if you aren't, could you be permanently blinded by a careless glance? Do you really want to risk blindness? Take the safe approach and leave it to the professionals and their instruments.

This isn't of an eclipse, but a 28-day time lapse - but since it's the moon and it's cool, I'll post it!

I'm so proud of my fellow SoCal Otters for having their priorities straight.

That'll be happening while I'm in the midst of getting up for my morning routine for work tomorrow. Wonder if I'll be able to see any of it. I remember there being a solar eclipse around noon one time when I was in 2nd grade I think. We could go and watch it outside but they gave us special eclipse-viewing glasses.

The Bus's "blood moon" comment (if I may take the liberty of interpreting) applies to how the moon looks when it is eclipsed. Because the Earth's atmosphere bends the sun's light around, the moon will be visible but a dark reddish color. It's worth seeing.

Crap, the weatherman said clear, but it has clouded up and looks like a storm is brewing. The moon has risen but can't be seen through the cloud cover.

The picture above is pretty accurate, but with our cloud cover and light pollution, it is perhaps more of a uniform, medium gray.
