I'm taking Pharm this semester so I know nothing, but my friend the pharmacist says expired tylenol can cause deafness (and I'm not joking about Rush Limbaugh, who took too many painkillers, not expired ones).

Also, drugs in solid form are more stable, generally, then liquid form. But I'd still respect the dates. Unless I was on a deserted island or something. Why take the chance?

It will give you an erection that lasts about 8 hours. At least that's what happened to me.

Why? It's cheaper and safer to crush it at the junk yard

Not sure that's right. There was a report about a link between hydrocodone+acetaminophen abuse (aka Vicodin, aka Rush's good time) and deafness, but nothing I'm aware of about expired acetaminophen.

Search of tylenol.com, drugs.com, google in general, and asking a pharmacist I know all yield results that point to a misunderstanding somewhere.

Probably was a misunderstanding (and it was from a few years ago). I'll ask this person again. Or you could just have her call me.

j/k

Certain drugs definitely decompose into toxic and lethal compounds, but I doubt that anything sold OTC would be in this class because we'd have people dying left and right. Still, I'd trash it because it might be way less or more effective than it is intended to be, or decompose into compounds that interact dangerously with other medications you might be taking.

I asked him again and he said the details elude him (he's retired), but maintains that it's one of the few drugs that degrades to a toxic compound.

Sorry that I don't have more info. I couldn't find anything either. It could be that since this pharmacist is "old-school" that he was taught something they don't teach anymore.

Thanks for checking. For good measure I'll ask that pharmacist I questioned (my wife) to check with other pharmacist friends to see if they have a sense of the issue.

He was good enough to followup with me. He now says that he misremembered and that the drug that does degrade to a toxic substance is tetracycline.

He was thinking about acetaminophen (tylenol) because he says a lot of people try to kill themselves with tylenol.

Sorry for the confusion.

Yeah. They mix it with a bunch of alcohol. They usually end up alive with liver damage after a charcoal NG tube.
