My neighbor is using my garbage can.

Today I when I went to the mail box, I noticed some extra cans and bottles in the recycling bin. I then looked in the trash can and found a bag of someone elses garbage. Apparently someone is trying to save a few bucks on trash service (all of $20 a month). So I took the bag and brought it inside for some forensic analysis. Here is what I discovered:

Her name.
She is 48 a year-old Jewish woman who apparently lives alone.
She travels to Macon, GA about once a month and prefers to stay at the Red Roof Inn.
She has two Mastercards, a Visa card, a Discover card, and an Amex card.
Her home address and phone number.
Her email address.
Her cell number.

She shops at Parisian and Whole Foods. It's not like she doesn't have the money to pay for trash service.

So what should I do? If I show up on her doorstep to return her garbage, she could just avoid dumping it in my can. People who do this sort of thing aren't easy to shame into submission.

Is what she's doing illegal? Would anybody care?

A friend recommended that I call a trash company and set up service for her. Won't they require some sort of proof of who I am?

Pee in her butt.

I would go over and talk to her. Where I work, I found out one day that the store next door was dumping their stuff into our dumpster. It just so happened that the owner was there that day. I told him, he went next door and talked to them, problem solved.

Ask her not to do it anymore. If she denies it was her, demonstrate that you have all that personal info about her. Tell her you will refrain from signing her up for porn and spam as long as she refrains from using your garbage can.

Or buy a large, nasty dog and have it sit by the garbage cans.

Or simply return her garbage to her yard (with or without the bag - your choice).

If it's not causing a problem, I wouldn't say anything and just remember this in case you ever need to ask her for a favor.

And $20 a month? My trash bill is just under $12 a month ($35 every three months, for one standard can).

Sounds like you have enough of her personal information to now take over her life!

Do you know if this was an isolated incident, or has she been doing it for awhile? If it's a one-time thing, I wouldn't sweat it, but if she does it all the time I'd have a friendly chat with her. If that doesn't work, then many of the options above would be the next step.

could it have been a one time thing?
do you know that she doesnt pay for trash service.. she never puts a can at the road?
maybe she had cleaned out her car or something and your can was only a few feet away, while hers was around back of the house?

I'm also wondering if this was a one-time thing. Perhaps her cans were loaded up that day and she didn't think you'd mind an extra one in yours. Or perhaps she just mistook your can for hers (do you live close together)?

On the other hand, if she's doing this on a regular basis, I can give you Mel Gibson's phone number. He'll take care of her.

I third the "is this a one-time thing" concern; however, it seems to me to be very rude to do this without asking permission. I have allowed my neighbors who are having parties this month to use the extra garbage can I have for their overflow, but they have asked in advance.

Send her a bill for $10 for garbage service.

I would set the bag of trash on her porch. She'll get the point (well, hopefully). Don't dump it out or anything, just return her trash.

Today is trash day for both companies that handle the subdivision. When I drove by today she had no trash cans out by the street. Actually she had none visible anywhere at all. According to zabasearch she's lived there for four years.

I live about five houses away on a different street. She would have had to either walk a couple hundred yards with a bag of trash or thrown it in the back of her car and driven it.

I seriously doubt that it's a one-time thing. I think it may be the first time she's been busted. Given that almost every receipt has a coupon of some sort applied, I think she may have a habit of pinching pennies.

It does seem like she's distributing her garbage to avoid paying. Since she just used your pail, she probably won't dump anything there again for a few weeks. She's gotta spread it out, so no one gets wise to her.

I would leave the bag in front of her door. I know it's just garbage, but I wouldn't want anybody putting who the hells know what in my trash cans either. If it happens again, ask her in person not to do it anymore.

Not sure about yours but in my state this would definately be illegal. If requested we must be able to show a receipt for sanitation services. It might also be considered some sort of theft of service.

Whatever you do don't go talk to her. Are you crazy?

First tell your HOA. It is surely against 87 different rules and sub-rules. They will send her a very nasty note and totally piss her off that should be taken care of.

Or, sue her. I mean, come on...putting trash in a trash can!!! The horror....And I would call one of the Reverends (Sharpton or Jackson) to really get your issue put forth in a clear unbiased fashion.

Lastly if all else fails....time for the taser....

I'd probably just drop it off on her driveway some night. I certainly wouldn't confront her about it. If you bump into any neighbors, I would mention it to them, and get their reaction.

Wow, what are you waiting for, all that credit/personal info, I'd have a new home theater set up by now, plus a new car in the driveway. Tell her she can use my trash can anytime.

Although I have to question your CSI tactics, you brought a trash bag from some complete stranger into your house!?! I can only imagine what your place must look like... scenes from the movie Seven and Silence Of The Lambs are running through my head for some reason.
