That statement would seem to confirm that he at least behaved very badly and said "despicable" things.

I'm starting to believe the reports.

He's clearly trying to blame his drunken state and his "disease," an alcoholism "relapse." Well Mel, a person who isn't a bigot could get as drunk as a skunk and would never spew the vile filth you have been reported to have said. If you indeed said those things there is no excuse and no one should ever give you any respect ever again. And your protestations of not being anti-semitic are totally blown, whether or not your film was actually anti-semitic (I didn't think it was although I thought it stunk).

Agreed, however I do give him a very small amount of credit for at least taking responsbility and apologizing properly.

True. But that's the point of an apology - I agree I blew it and I am sorry.

But it seems like (from this thread), that denial and 'no way that happened' is indeed the better way to go, EVEN IF the worst is the truth.

An apology now only makes people madder, because the apology affirms that the 'bad thing did happen'.

In the past, an apology meant that the person was sorry for what happened and would try to do better - and the response TENDED to be - ok, we'll see if we can forgive you, rather than ---- damn - it's true? You're TOAST, man.

As I said before, society demands more than an apology esp. since over 10,000 were killed last year due to alcohol-releated car accidents.
