What happened to Roman Meal bread?

I've been eating Roman Meal bread for the last 20+ years and now every grocery store in my area no longer has it.

Does anyone else eat it? Can anyone else get it? Is this a regional thing or what. Did they go under?

Going cold turkey on my bread. (No pun intended.) Not a good thing.

So apparently no one eats this bread either. What a bummer.

I buy Roman Meal occasionally. I haven't seen it lately either. Maybe it's a regional thing.

It's been my favorite. I've noticed it is getting harder and harder to find.

I've never tried that bread but I was outraged a few months when I found out the company who manufactured my favorite bedtime earplugs, Quiet Down, stopped producing them. I even went so far as calling Flynt and inquiring why.

Bastards!

Maybe it was made my Interstate Bakeries who make Wonder Bread and Hostess. Could be when they went belly up and were bought out the new company discontinued it. I haven't seen Roman Bread for quite awhile.
They still make/sell Hillbilly Bread?

I grew to love this bread as a kid, after initially hating it and wanting to cling to my Wonder.

I grew up on Roman meal but it's probably been a good 25 years since I've seen a loaf. I forgot all about them.

It was the bread my mother bought in the 1970s. I still prefer coarse bread to that white airy stuff.

Looks like it's made by Schwebel's now. It's available at Kroger. Probably other places, too.

Re: What happened to Roman Meal bread?

Here may be a partial answer anyway:

http://www.bakingbusiness.com/articles/news_home/Business/2015/02/Flowers_acquires_Roman_Meal_tr.aspx?ID={3478368E-1FD8-4CCE-84F5-834CFBC9B250}&cck=1

Or, the short answer: the rights to the Roman Meal Trademark for bread, buns & rolls in North America was sold to Flowers Foods in early 2015.

Flowers Foods is a huge packaged food company that owns brands like Wonderbread, Sunbeam, Home Pride, Tastykake and, among others, Nature's Own. I have noticed in the past couple of years that the number of Nature's Own varieties in stores has increased. My guess is that Roman Meal was basically sacrificed in many regions to make room for more Nature's Own (or other Flowers brands) products on shelves.

Here is my prediction: Within five years or so, sales of their whole grain bread products will stagnate for one reason or another and Flowers will re-introduce the Roman Meal brand across all markets with advertising that emphasizes its wholesome image and how its been around since 1912, blah-blah-blah, and start pushing it back into stores to revitalize sales.

Or even the brown airy stuff. Packed with glorious gluten.

Whole Foods has some good bread selections.

We have a bread machine. Mrs Danger buys Russian wheat flour and makes me a hearty loaf once a week.

Re: What happened to Roman Meal bread?

I always loved their packaging and the color of the plastic bag, but I always hated the bread. It was so grainy and pieces would always get stuk to the teeth, throat, and top of the mouth.

Re: What happened to Roman Meal bread?

As of this past week, 09/10/2017, Ralphs (Los Angeles area and probably beyond) no longer carries Roman Meal. I met the bread distributor at my local store and he told me that Oroweat, who had the license to manufacture Roman Meal, has decided to stop manufacturing the bread.

I assume it's due to its price and lack of interest in the brand. $3.99 for a loaf was at the high end of bread products and it never seemed to be discounted for a weekly sale. So, changed to Sara Lee 100% Whole Wheat, priced high as well, but does go on sale now and then.
