Best place to watch NYC fireworks on July 4?

We'll be in New York for the Fourth... where is the best place to watch the fireworks? I'd rather not pay $75 a head for some restaurant buffet, but I wouldn't be opposed to paying out a few bucks for a great viewing opportunity.

No idea. I always watched from the roof of a friend's apartment building.

Call these guys for thoughts?

Pick up a hooker while you're there. Nothing says Independence Day like a syphilitic blowjob.

I'd suggest somewhere along the East River in Manhattan.

The one time I was there on the fourth, I just followed the crowd and ended up with a great view. I started out around Greenwich Village, but I'm not sure where I ended up.

hands down the best place i've seen fire works in new york is from a pier in long island city.. it's free and you're surrounded by mexican families.. not sure about map location, but it is under the old school coca-cola sign near the river.. seriously it is a great place to see fireworks

You can get to both of these via subway and don't need to shell out big bucks on parking or restaurants. They have several barges out in the East River and near Governor's Island and the Statue of Liberty. Anywhere near where the Hudson and East rivers meet you should be able to see a lot.

Anyone ever tried watching from the 59th street bridge? Since the Macy's fireworks are set off from the East River just south of there, I can't imagine a better location...

Maybe if you're trying to see the downtown fireworks. Why, did they stop setting them off from the East River in Midtown?

Yeah, that might not be the best angle, but I'm sure you'd see some stuff. I watched from Astoria one time and saw a lot. You'll see the northern most barge well, but probably not the other 2. Not that it matters that much since they all shoot the same sequence of rockets at the same time.

Yeah, the main fireworks are set off from the East River, not downtown...
