Grain: Are you with me, or against me?
My girlfriend swears up and down that the men she knows shave against the grain. I even had her call up her brother to prove it. This just seems painful and wrong to me. I realize we have had shaving questions here before, but I'd just like to know how many people shave so strangely.
When shaving, do you shave with the grain or against it? |

Maybe you need a poll. |

Depends how thick the hair is. It's relatively sparse on my cheeks, where I shave with. But I have to go against underneath my chin and jaw.

Face or balls?
![]() Anyway, years ago I used to go with the grain, then against to get it closer. I guess it was when the Mach 3 came out that I switched to just with the grain, because that razor gets it close enough (and I don't want to wear out that thing too soon). I couldn't imagine ever going against the grain to start with. |

For the most part, I go with the grain, but as al bundy says, I also tend to go both ways, especially if I want a little bit closer shave.

I used to go with the grain, but found I could sometimes eek out an extra day of not shaving by against the grain. If I havent shaved in like four days, then I have to start with the grain and then go against it, hurts too much to start against it

at least on my cheeks and rest of my face on my neck I go from bottom up, not sure if that's with or against in that section

Against (both actually depends on what part of the face) and I only use hot water, no soap or shaving creme.

Even with an electric shaver I go against the grain. If there are any strays that are too long for the shaver I pull out the Quattro (thanks Myster X) and cut those down with no soap or water, against the grain too.

With the brillo like hair I have on my face and head, I don't waste time going with the grain. For me it's against the grain, always.

I shaved all messed up. I go up on my left cheek, but somehow ever since high school I got in the habit of going sideways on my right cheek. Still do it.
Whatever works-I get clean shave so that's al; that matters. Plus I only grow facial hair fast enough to shave maybe every 2 days. |

With the grain. Against the grain supposedly causes ingrown hairs.

hot water is key
