NBA player's wife lets him cheat once per year

In this month's ESPN The Magazine, the Utah Jazz forward's wife of six years, former Russian pop star Masha Lopatova, said she would allow him to be annually unfaithful. Part of her rationale: if a person is deprived of something, he will crave it even more.

"It's the same way raising children," she told the Salt Lake Tribune. "If I tell my child, 'No pizza, no pizza, no pizza,' what does he want more than anything? Pizza."

Utah was in town Sunday night to play the Sonics, which meant Kirilenko was here, which meant the Go 2 Guy was front and center asking every question I could think of about the pros and cons of consensual infidelity.

And I'll be darned if I can come up with a con, though the unenlightened Go 2 Wife is on record as saying: "No pizza for you."

Kirilenko told the magazine he didn't plan to take his wife up on her offer, which is noble but too bad, really, for those of us who would like to live vicariously through him.

Kirilenko said this wouldn't be a hot topic in his native Russia, that it's just one of many things he and his wife have talked about to "live happily for a long, long time" (or one night a year, anyway).

Acting on temptation is one of many reasons why marriages split up, Kirilenko said, thus the reason his wife made the offer.

"Just to offer it doesn't mean something happens," he said.

Kirilenko is amused by the line of questioning, saying, "Sex sells more than anything." But it's more than that, it's a wife saying it's OK to cheat, and it happened in Salt Lake City of all places.

"I don't think they approve of this kind of thing in the Bible," I said.

"I don't think it's something for the Bible," he said, his English somewhat broken as opposed to my comprehension, which is completely broken.

"In Russia, this is not a big deal," he said. "A big deal is keeping your family. America, how you say, is a puritan country."

Kirilenko, 25, and Lopatova have a 4-year-old son, Theodore. Naturally I pictured little Teddy asking: "Where's Daddy?" on the night in question and wondering what Mommy's answer would be.

Asked if he really felt the offer would improve his marriage, Kirilenko said: "Definitely. This is an example of what works for somebody but doesn't work for everybody."

It drew all kinds of reaction in the Sonics' locker room.

"If you give a kid pizza, he might want a different kind of pizza," said Nick Collison. "It might get worse."

Collison showed the Kirilenko article to his girlfriend and "she instantly got mad at me. Her defenses came up and all of a sudden she was in a bad mood. I know not to ask for anything like that."

Ray Allen said the Kirilenkos have their own personal relationship, and he respects them for that.

"I appreciate her willingness to bend and not conform to the regular rules," he said.

Allen said his fiancé is open-minded, but he won't ask, saying: "She definitely would not want to see me with another woman."

Between smiles, a single Earl Watson said: "Whatever works for your marriage. European mentality is way different from American mentality."

If he does get married someday, he won't bring it up. "I wouldn't want to come to work with handprints all over my cheeks," Watson said.

Echoing Collison, Mikki Moore and Chris Wilcox intimated that one piece of pizza could lead to wanting the whole parlor.

The Sonics also said it's a one-way street, not wanting to make the same offer to the women in their lives.

"Hell no!" Moore said. "As soon as she gives you something, you've gotta give her something, and I ain't."

One article I read stated that Kirilenko has been kicked out of the NBA Player's Association on general principle.
