Who's the wise crack to name "pneumonia?"

I just don't understand... if a letter is there but is silent, what is the point of it being there?

for all I know it could be abslkjiwbpneumonia.

Can anyone explain why pneumonia is spelled the way it is?

I think they did that so that when I have to spell things to people, I can say, "'That's 'A' as in 'apple"...'P' as in 'pneumonia'..."

You're just saying it wrong. The "P" isn't silent.
The correct pronunciation is "puh-neumonia."

Etymology: New Latin, from Greek, from pneumOn lung, alteration of pleumOn.

That's according to the dictionary.
Much of the English language is borrowed from other languages.

But what can you use to help you remember "mnemonic"?

If you think about it, nu-metal also fits that characteristic, as it is pronounced like so: "crap"

I'd rather not. With the exception of the whip scene, that whole movie is forgettable.

The earliest references to it are in the writings of Hippocrates over 2400 years ago, although it appears to have already been named before he wrote about it.

Does this mean we can rename a certain member "pneumanoid'?
