Help identify this snake
This snake appears to have made our backyard pond its home. I'm not really sure what it is though. It's probably just over a foot long. Not very thick either. Any ideas?
My wife is a bit hesitant to get in the pond to clean it until we figure out what the snake is. ![]() ![]() |

I dont think water moccasins have that shape of head. Theirs is more diamond-shaped I think. Water Moccasins are also 'pit vipers'--this snake in the pic has no pits that I can see.

I'm hoping to get a closer shot of the head. I have had others think it's a cottonmouth, but not very sure though.

I say leave it in there and you will not have rodent problem. I does not look like a venomus species to me. You may post the pic on kingsnake.com they have a big section for reptiles over there.

Definitely not a watwer moccasin. This is what one looks like and the two I killed as a boy looked the same:
Mocassins also have more of a crest on their back instead of the mostly rounded back that this snake has. Here is a decent snakes of Texas page: http://www.texassnakes.net/pictures.html My guess is a Blotched Water Snake. There is also a species (not listed there) called the Brazos Water Snake. Regardless, it is probably a non-poisonous Nerodia species.

It's a Boa perplexor, well known for its ability to elude identification. It's common for you to be befuddled, confused, or flabbergasted. Swelling from the problem "thinking" areas in your head will be greatly reduced in 1 or 2 days.

It is still a snake. I'd let someone else f' with it. I wouldn't kill it....but I'd be concerned if I had kids and they played near it.

a small non-venomous snake is no more dangerous than a frog.

I don't plan on killing it. If it gets too big and becomes a threat to the fish, I'll move him elsewhere. He'll thin the tadpole population some. Those little toads hump like crazy.

You can tell it is non-venomous by the shape of it's head. All venomous snakes have a triangular shaped head.
This will really thin out your tadpole population when it eats the mommy and/or daddy frog, which it will when it gets to the right size.
