Researchers hone banana-skin fuel

Instead of throwing away the skin the next time you eat a banana, imagine if it could be turned into fuel for the car.

It might sound like the stuff of Hollywood movies, but researchers have now found a way to turn banana waste into fuel, by composting it, and capturing the gas.

Tony Heidrich from the Australian Banana Growers Council says one in three bananas do not meet market specifications and a prototype fuel plant could be built in north Queensland to benefit farmers.

"One of the main objectives of the study was to see if there was enough waste and whether there would be enough fuel produced to make it commercially feasible and that's essentially I suppose been the core finding," he said.

"That is that whilst it's not economical to produce electricity when it's compared to coal-fired electricity but certainly enough to produce a fuel replacement."
