The salt is just for flavor ... even the low-sodium versions have about 20% RDA of sodium if I remember correctly. They add calcium chloride to compensate and that tastes pretty bad to me. When I can get good fresh tomatoes in summer, I take a couple of them and blend with garlic cloves, some onion, and parsley, (and plenty of black pepper) and make my own juice cocktail. I like it a lot better than the canned, the other flavors compensate for the somewhat plain flavor of the tomatoes.

Tomatoes are just one of those foods that require salt to taste really good.

I love making tomato sandwiches with white toast, butter, and lots of SALT!

Take away the salt and it just ruins it.

Yeah - I can't imagine eating a tomato without salt or some kind of salad dressing.

Have you ever tried low-sodium V-8? It's atrocious.

Salt does more than make things salty, it's a flavor enhancer. Although I don't do it, I know plenty of people who sprinkle a little bit of salt on fruit, such as apples and watermelon to make it taste better.

Now I love salt, but I would never do that.

Yep, sodium is (relatively) high on ketchup too.
