I have a paved bike trail within a block of my house and I don't wear a helmet when I'm sticking to that, but whenever I'm going to be doing any biking on the street, I wear my helmet and gloves.

I also finally picked up a flashing rear light and a front headlight, since I do a lot of biking between 5 and 6 a.m.

I don't wear one. It's far more important to look cool than to be safe.

Hell yeah I do! Often times I am also wearing elbow and knee pads, and maybe some chest armour. Thats because do extreme downhill riding.

Well, my daily ride, I don't wear a helmet to the light rail station - .5 mi (to work), but I wear one on the way home (~8 mi road ride)

would you go down these w/o a helmet?

here are some pics of the trails I like- (and a chance to gloat )

I just crashed a few weeks ago. Head bounced off the ground and cracked my helmet clean through. I'm glad I was wearing it.

But I only wear it while mountain biking.

I only ride on road bikes, but I use this method (probably dumb but hey):

If I'm riding on roads on roads with a breakdown lane I never use one...if I'm going to be on roads w/o one (and thus I actually have to ride in the road) I wear one.

My town in small so I hardly pass many cards at all.

actually, i take back my response.. I often do part of my ride without a helmet. Often times we have longer fire road climbs when mt. biking, and I will take it off and strap it to my camelback for the climb.

In the Tour de France and all the european races if the finish to the days racing is an uphill stage, then they can take off the helmets. I see no problem with that.

I wear my helmet on any road or mountain ride.

I don't wear it when I'm riding to campus though. Stupid, but for some reason I don't.

Never have worn a helmet. Then again, any bike riding I do is at a comfortable speed (no racing), in a lightly traveled residential area.

And the terrain around here is very flat, completely opposite from the trails you see above. By the way, while I would never ride on those trails, they do look like they would be fun to hike.

hikers!

(they hate us more)

those first 2 were in the mountains behind Santa Barbara. I had to strap on a miniature cowbell because there were a lot of hikers and blind corners toward the bottom of the mtn. They should have to wear helmets too!

ALL THE TIME!

And I get so pissed when I see young kids riding around without helmets.

I don't care if I didn't wear them when I was a kid (who did?), we were just ignorant to the fact that our skulls were not harder than the asphalt!

too bad insurance companies don't have clauses where if you crack your head open because of not wearing a helmet, they can deny coverage.

Around my neighborhood, nope

Riding to work (7 miles or so) yep

Almost always on trails, but I'm SUPER jealous of the terrain above. Different kind of trails here in Vermont. Though they can still be a good time, they are always thick-wooded with little view. Those shots above are a dream for me.

I'm sorry to say I've never worn a helmut and I'm too old to start now. I just ride around the neiborhood and am real careful anyway.
