Walter Becker (Steely Dan) dead at 67

Not sure if we have any Steely Dan fans on here but I've seen those guys five times over the years, always a treat. Walter's corny but awesome stage talk had me rolling each time. He'll be missed.

Aww man, RIP. Loved Steely Dan most of my life, but never got a chance to see them live. I guess if Fagan is still touring, I can catch him.

Bummer. I never saw them either. Fagen has already said “I intend to keep the music we created together alive as long as I can with the Steely Dan band.”

That's too bad. I became a fan of Steely Dan late in life, when I bought Citizen Steely Dan about ten years ago, but I've listened to those songs a lot since then.

What a terrible loss. Steely Dan are one of the most underrated American bands of the rock era, and Becker was such a huge component of their genius. I was lucky enough to see them twice, and I will always cherish their music.

Becker and Fagen WERE Steely Dan (more or less), and Steely Dan was a brilliant band.

Very sad to see him gone at 67.

This one stings a little. Ever since Can't Buy a Thrill, I've been a fan. Such perfectionists. So many great songs. I've mentioned this on here before, but I still get goosebumps when I hear Phil Woods' sax solo on Doctor Wu.

Been a fan since the first time hearing their late career classics like FM, Peg, Hey Nineteen, and Josie. Then I searched out the earlier stuff and liked it just as much. Most of their songs have terrific Becker solos.

RIP the great Walter Becker

I think this might be my favorite Steely Dan song (awesome Michael McDonald backing vocals):

...but Deacon Blues, Gaucho, My Old School and a host of others are probably a very close second.

RIP Walter.

2 of my favorite Steely Dan LPs are Aja and Gaucho, songs on those 2 albums will live forever...

I feel like such an idiot. I loved Steely Dan and had never seen them. They had a fucking RESIDENCY in Vegas earlier this year and I didn't go (FWIW my wife has always hated them and getting her to join me would have been a non-starter).

Deacon Blues is my favorite as well, but I've always loved this song that I felt should have been a bigger hit. It doesn't quite have that classic Steely Dan sound, but I consider it a 70's masterpiece.

Loved Steely Dan as I have all of their CD's. They are definitely underrated as it seems like the only friends I know that like them either play an instrument or really understand good music. I know that sounds snooty, but you have to appreciate their music to understand how great it is.

Kid Charlemagne and My Old School are probably my 2 favorite SD songs. And Aja is probably one of the 10 Best Albums of the 70's.

Been listening to Citizen Steely Dan all afternoon. If you get a chance, listen to the guitar work on the live track of bodhisattva. Becker is all over the map on that song...wow
