Is John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ the worst song of all time?
By Hardeep Phull October 28, 2016 | 12:34am | Updated

Played at weddings, funerals, Olympic ceremonies and even the annual New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square, John Lennon’s song “Imagine” has been the all-purpose anthem of sentimentality for 45 years.

But if you’re one of those people who secretly hates it, don’t worry — you’re not the only one.

Last weekend, British music fan Edward Carter and some friends were casually discussing songs they hated when he decided to extend the conversation to social media.

“Dear Twitter,” he posted. “What is the song you most detest and despise? Thank you.”

Within 48 hours, the bemused Brit, who had only around 1,000 Twitter followers, had received several thousand nominations from all over the world, and Lennon’s ballad was a repeat offender.

“I think it’s the whole idea of talking about poverty and misery, while John was actually hanging around in his palatial New York townhouse,” Carter tells The Post. “It’s the duplicity of the whole thing.”

Amazed by the nerve he touched and the speed at which he received suggestions, Carter, a 36-year-old artist living in the southern coastal town of Brighton, collated the results into a blog post containing 337 deplorable ditties (listed below). Since then, it’s gone viral, with people nominating even more songs they loathe.

“A lot of people seemed quite glad they weren’t alone in hating these songs,” he says. “It boils down to people feeling everybody is having this great experience, but feeling excluded because they can’t see what everyone else sees — and it makes them angry.”

Another big anti-hit is “Big Yellow Taxi” in all of its forms. “That was the first song to be nominated in its entirety,” says Carter, referring to the Joni Mitchell original, subsequent cover by Amy Grant, and the horrendous Counting Crows version featuring Vanessa Carlton.

The sheer ubiquity of songs such as “Love Shack” by the B-52s and “Rude” by Magic! also ensured plenty of ire. But for some, it was also a chance to air grievances against overexposed artists in general.

“There were some artists that people would tweet and say, ‘Anything by that person,’ ” says Carter, noting that Taylor Swift, Phil Collins and Coldplay fell into that category.

As a big Bob Dylan fan, Carter admits to being heartened that not one song by the recent Nobel Prize winner for literature was nominated. But he was pleased to see two of his least favorite bands — the Byrds and the Eagles — in the cross hairs.

“I have never been sold on any Dylan cover versions, especially not the Byrds’ whiny version of ‘Mr. Tambourine Man.’ As for the Eagles, I can’t stand any band that telegraphs their guitar solos.”

Perhaps most surprising? Carter has added the vast majority of the 337 songs to a giant Spotify playlist entitled “Kryptonite Songs” — and they’re a hit.

“You would think people would want to avoid such a playlist, but it is getting a lot of play,” he says. “Maybe they’re gluttons for punishment.”

I think a lot of those songs fall into the category of "I used to like it, but then it got played to death." Stop listening to stations that play things to death. You'll be happier.

Imagine is better than at least 200 songs on that list.

Imagine is pretty terrible, but for me, nothing tops:

4 Non Blondes — What’s Up?

I hated that song the first time I heard it, and my opinion of it has only gone down.

If I had to pick one song from that list, it would without a doubt be "All Star" by Smashmouth. Terrible. I was like 13 or 14 when that song debuted and thought it was shitty even back then.

Some of these are indeed terrible, but most are just overplayed.

Odd list. One one hand, I would have absolutely voted for that Mr. Big song, but I find it hard to believe that multiple people picked Elbow's One Day Like This as their most hated song.

I love Imagine.

I'd nominate Tom's Diner for worst song ever, and right up there with it is the Paul McCartney Christmas tune.

Exactly ... bad and overplayed are very different things. Songs like Yesterday, Dancing Queen, I Will Survive, Bohemian Rhapsody, You're So Vain, Stairway to Heaven (and many many others in this list) are classics in their genres. Just overplayed to the point where you want to change the station when they come on.

"Worst" are those "fingernails on the blackboard" songs, which a number of these are. Stuff like Hollaback Girl. Black Eyed Peas My Humps really belongs here (though the Alannis Morrisette cover is awesome).

I agree with most of the others. Ubiquity breeds contempt. "Imagine" is a gorgeous song, until one has heard it a thousand times.
Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is one I find unbearably cloying. And it just goes on and on and on... and on. Something like "Who Let the Dogs Out" was annoying as all fuck the first time I heard it.

Have you listened to Jeff Buckley's cover? It is haunting.

Eh, some of the songs on that list I really like, no matter how many times I've heard them, some I've detested from the first listen, and others I used to like until I got sick of them. It's all about taste. For the record, I do like "Imagine" though, it holds up for me.

I would think the most commonly hated songs would be popular dance songs. Many of them have no redeeming musical value beyond their rhythm to get people dancing. While they might be fine in a club setting, they aren't music anyone could listen to outside that setting.

I just did. I still don't love it, but it's better than most versions I have heard, downplaying the treacly chorus while the others repeat it ad nauseam.

Back to the point, I dislike for Imagine for its naivete and its socialism. Go figure, I hate that it is a political song.

I'm sure a lot of those songs are hated simply because they're over-played.

Imagine has a good melody, but the lyrics make me cringe.

Really don't know how "Who Let the Dogs Out" isn't on this list. A truly unbearable song.

Who Let the Dogs Out falls into the "worst songs of all time" category with crap like Seasons in the Sun and Afternoon Delight. Despite the title, this list is really just songs that people get sick of after a while. Overplayed, cloying, or just inconsequential. I don't think anyone could really argue that Belinda Carlisle's Circle in the Sand is the worst thing ever, but it's completely irrelevant and forgettable. I hadn't thought of it in years, but now i can hear the refrain in my head, and I'm already tired of it again. It's like a commercial jingle, and any nostalgia factor is more annoying that wistful.

Two songs I always hated as complete torture:

One of my 2 most hated songs is on the list, Starship — We Built This City, so the list gets my approval.

We Are The World should be on the list as well.
