Aerosmith Going on Farewell Tour in 2017.

Get ready to say goodbye to Aerosmith.

Frontman Steven Tyler confirmed earlier this week the band is planning a farewell tour for 2017, telling Howard Stern on Tuesday, "I love this band, I really do, and I want to squash every thought that anybody might have about this: The band's over."

"We're doing a farewell tour, but it's only because it's time," Tyler, 68, said.

The radio host made Tyler confirm it: Did he mean "farewell" as in the band would be gone for good?

"Yeah," Tyler said, adding that guitarist Joe Perry also knows. (Tyler's manager did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.)

And while Tyler said the farewell tour would go on "probably forever," he also joked with Stern about bands like The Who and KISS, which each went on multiple "farewell tours."

In fact, the decision to wrap up seems to be some time in the making. Tyler told Rolling Stone in May that Aerosmith would likely go out one last time in 2017.

"Look, there's two bands that still have the original members, us and the Stones," he said. "I'm grateful for that."

Aerosmith formed in 1970 and released their last studio album, Music from Another Dimension!, in 2012. Meanwhile, Tyler has recently been pursuing a country career, with a solo album set to release in July.

Well, at their age, it might be an actual "farewell" tour, as opposed to so many others that were done by bands who just kept right on rolling.

What surprises me is that they have not released at least 4 more greatest hits albums and a few more live albums between 2012 and now!

I would guess the possibility of the group doing multiple "farewell tours" might hinge on how well Tyler's country career goes.

I wish theywould put out the complete show of 1978 California Jam. The entire festival was professionally recorded. Columbia released a two record set in the day with two songs from each artist. Many years ago the entire Foreigner set was on the radio in top quality sound. I've got a crappy sounding bootleg and the Aerosmith set is so much better than Live Bootleg. They do stuff like Rats in the Cellar and Lick and A Promise.

I've got a 6 cd set with most of the Cal Jam 2 performances in about as good an audio quality as you'll get imho.[it's got the Nugent,Heart,Dave Mason,Foreigner,Aerosmith and Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush performances]

Ron Wood and Daryll Jones are original members of the Stones?

Wyman isn't playing with them either. There's a thread about bands that have stayed together for decades with original members. Only two I remember are ZZ Top and U2.

It's funny because Tyler could have said we're the only big band from the 70s that's still intact and he would have been pretty much right. Why he mentioned the Stones who have had several members leave is beyond me.

Re: Aerosmith Going on Farewell Tour in 2017.

This announcement is a long time coming. Aerosmith hasn't put out a decent album in 27 years anyway. They should've done this before Tyler started his American Idol stint while he was still focusing on the band.

Re: Aerosmith Going on Farewell Tour in 2017.

Joe Perry denies Steven Tyler's claims that next Aerosmith tour is their last.

Steven Tyler recently told Howard Stern that the next Aerosmith tour would be the band’s last, but guitarist Joe Perry isn’t so sure about that: “It could be the last,” Perry told Rolling Stone. “But it’s really hard for me to imagine a last gig. Sorry.”

In June, Tyler said, “We’re doing a farewell tour, but only because it’s time. We’ve never done that.” Perry, though, says the idea of a farewell tour is only “an option.”

“… at this point in our lives and our career, maybe it is time to say, ‘OK, it’s the end of this era, but a new era is on the horizon,’” Perry, who is currently on tour with Hollywood Vampires, said. “So I don’t know if I’m comfortable saying ‘final tour’ and making a big deal out of it, but we’ll see what happens. If it was going to happen, we’re closer to it than, say, any other time in our insane career.”

Aerosmith formed in the early ’70s and last released a new album in 2012. Tyler’s been focusing on his solo career, and is debuting his first album without the band July 15.

Does Golden Earring still have all their original members?

No, but they've been the same since 1970

Re: Aerosmith Going on Farewell Tour in 2017.

Joe Perry apparently had a cardiac episode on stage tonight and had to be rushed to the hospital. Stable now.

Well that's a rather dire prediction

Dire?

The guy is in the hospital today and should not be on stage tomorrow. That's just common sense.

Looks like the tour (and my show tomorrow night) is continuing. Wonder who they will bring in.

Could be anyone. There's not much of a learning curve. By far, most of their songs are covers that most guitar players would/should already know.

If Grohl and Axl can perform whole shows on a throne because of broken legs, I say wheel the hospital bed out on stage and let the guy play prone. Call the nurse out every so often to check the IV drip, and candy stripers for a sponge bath...let's make a party of it!
