It used to be that older songs, or 'catalog singles', were ineligible for the Hot 100 unless it was an official re-release (like when 'Bohemian Rhapsody was re-released as a single from the Wayne's World soundtrack). It's why Michael Jackson's song "Thriller" didn't chart in the Hot 100 in 2009 when he died (despite being a top selling digital song at the time) but charted at #35 around Halloween last year.
