Platinum singles questions
Drinking morning coffee, watching oldies Music Choice channel on Comcast. They're playing a 5th Dimension song from 1971. The trivia tidbits they put up state the song went platinum in 1991.
How does a 45 single, only pressed and sold during the months it's on the charts reach platinum 20 years later? Even if downloads count this is before internet.
Regarding downloads. Do purchased downloads count toward the grand total? If the Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar" 45 sold 800,000 copies in 1971, then gets downloaded 200,000 times, does it receive platinum status? Is platinum status being handed out left and right to old songs that missed the mark when new because downloads put them over the top?
What about popular album tracks that were never singles? LZ's "Kashmir" was never a single. If it's downloaded 1,000,000 times is it platinum?
