It probably wasn't either one of them but their attorneys/publishers/record companies.

And Jeff doesn't "make" any artist sound like him. They know his production genius, his hit-making ability, and they seek him out because they specially want his sound.

I kind of get why Petty and other artists have sued for song similarities. 10 years from now when Sam Smith is broke and he tries to sell the song to a commercial Petty and Lynn can block it. Some toilet paper manufacturer wants to use the song but change the lyrics to something about wiping your ass but keeps the melody.

Okay, so.... Since there's a limited number of notes/chords you can play at any one moment, and since the duration of that note/chord is finite, and since the sequence of note/chords/durations over a 2-4 measure stretch is likewise finite.... can't one just record/copyright every possible combination and just sit back for the royalties to roll in?

"R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A, by John Mellencamp and The Romantics"
"Ice, Ice, Baby" by Vanilla Ice and Queen

etc.

Maybe you're referring to Lake Song which is a blatant Nick Drake homage just like Round the Bend off Sea Change.

I wasn't thinking of that one but there you go. One of the songs has chords that sound very similar to Beck. Of course, many cite Sea Change as a derivative album as well.

Not quite a good example of a song's chord progressions and/or melodies being copied for a different, completely original song.

And yes, like it or not, Jeff Lynne does make everyone he produces sound like him. For people with a good enough ear, you can tell when he's hand his hands on an artist's music. Aside from the vocals, it all sounds the same. He's the most boring "genius" I've ever heard.

Jeff Lynne is a genius in the way that Doctor Demento is a doctor.

Sorry, regardless of whether you like his sound anyone who can accomplish what Jeff Lynne has is a musical genius. I'd list his accomplishments but it's on Wikipedia.

Hmmm...your opinion or the opinion of Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty to name a few? Which to choose? Man, this one is a toughie.

Re: Tom Petty awarded songwriting royalties for Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me”

Have all those artists said that Lynne is a genius? Or do they think he's a solid professional who's easy to work with? I highly doubt that any of those people stipulate that they must only work with geniuses.

Also, please define what a musical genius is. Because on that list, I'd say Dylan is the only one I'd call a genius.

They're two *totally* different songs.

As for the topic on hand, Tom Petty speaks!

"About the Sam Smith thing. Let me say I have never had any hard feelings toward Sam. All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen. Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by. Sam’s people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement. The word lawsuit was never even said and was never my intention. And no more was to be said about it. How it got out to the press is beyond Sam or myself. Sam did the right thing and I have thought no more about this. A musical accident no more no less. In these times we live in this is hardly news. I wish Sam all the best for his ongoing career. Peace and love to all."
