The Brady Bunch had the best fade outs, especially when singing live on TV talent shows.

This is a crazy coincidence, but I was just considering listening to that exact album as I made some lunch. The Steven Wilson remaster, even!

Typically, I'm not crazy about fade-outs, but I don't really hate them. For the most part I can only think of a few songs that fade out.

I'm also pretty interested in tracking down that Holst album. I'm assuming there is a version (CD?) with a less interesting cover.

I think a lot of times the choice of a song fading or having a cold ending depends on where the song lies on the album - what's before it or after it. How it plays into the next track. Also, sometimes a single version of a song can fade earlier than the album track.

On Crack The Sky's Animal Notes, the song, We Want Mine has a cold ending which leads nicely into the next track. The single version fades before the abrupt ending.

I think a lot of artists fade songs right as they are getting into it to leave the listener wanting more. It also may be a time constraint issue, at least back in the day when records could only be 35-40 minutes or so in length (18-20 per side).

I was never a fan of fade-outs, tough to do a fade out live. I do sort of like songs that have a specific piece of music written to be a fade out, otherwise, I thought they were pointless.

The newest thing I'm noticing more on pop radio is the song will end, but immediately afterward a loop of the instrumental track of that song will start up for the DJ to talk over.

I hate fade-outs with a passion. They're lazy and make me think whoever wrote the song couldn't bother figuring out a proper ending. So yeah, I'm not sad to see them go.

There is nothing worse than listening to a fade out, when the music is getting good! Especially some cool guitar playing. I keep imaging after the fade out, the band is still jamming for another 20 minutes lol.

I've always liked fade outs. Some groups/artists have employed them to more artistic ends than others, but they are something I would sorely miss.

"All The Young Dudes" by the Mott the Hoople and "I Am The Walrus" by the Beatles are two examples of cool fade outs. The end of the rock opera "Tommy" by the Who also works well with a fade out.
