If you want to wander around some lesser known downtempo, here's a guy who compiles a pretty decent collection of links to legal free downloads from various artists. I've found a lot of cool stuff from him.

You owe it to yourself to check out the full CD's eventually. Start with Watermark and Shepherd Moons.

I also enjoy Enigma music as somebody else posted.

I'll add a band I would have never heard of if not for a mis-shipment by an eBay seller - Era. Liked the one mistake CD so much I ended up buying two other releases. Style is like Enya and Enigma, but better.

Which Era album is a good start?

Both the Into the Wild soundtrack and Ukulele Songs are frequently played by me. I also really like She & Him. Zooey Deschanel is one of the sexiest women in my opinion and I also happen to really like her as a singer. I listen to their albums a lot too.
I love Into the Wild. Ukulele, notsomuch. If anyone else is a fan of Into the Wild I highly recommend Sully Erna's Avalon. Awesome 'chill' album. This might be a drawback for some, but he's the lead singer of Godsmack, but the album is kinda in the same mold as Into the Wild (i.e. slower, mellow side project full of songs that would never fly on a Godsmack album) Probably my most played album of the past few years. I wish he'd do a new one.

I love Godsmack, but had no idea Sully put out a solo album. I'm listening to it now and it's awesome. Thanks for the recommendation.

In regards to Era, you can't go wrong starting with any of his albums. The style doesn't change like Enigma did, so you can jump anywhere. Era 2 is probably my favorite, if I had to choose.

I select Tangerine Dream's 1974 album Phaedra for tracks like these...

Listened to Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else last night before going to bed. Just perfect.

I like the way Hokeyboy thinks. When I need to chill out, I go modal:

Give a listen. It's on Spotify.
Not familiar with that specific album, but the track list looks pretty similar to the one I listen to (of my many Guaraldi albums, of course):

Two of my favorites.

I was all lined up to see The Blue Nile at Georgetown University in support of Hats in 1989 or so when they bailed on the tour due to extreme stage fright. Man, but I was bummed.

I do love me some Boards of Canada. "Roygbiv" is one of my all-time favorite songs. I'm also real fond of Trans Canada Highway.

I love this album. Al 3 C1 records are good but this one flows perfectly beginning to end IMO.

Yep, I have two or three Guaraldi Peanuts CDs so those tracks are really icing on the greatest hits compilations. Cast Your Fate to the Wind is supreme chill-out.

Stage fright at a university?! As a social phobic I can relate to that, but that's one of the reasons I'm not a rock star/musician; another being that it's simply not my bag.

Re: Best Chill Out Albums of All Time?

Speaking of Boards Of Canada, I think their 2013 work Tomorrow's Harvest is the best electronic album of that year. It blows away most of the generic material that keeps getting pumped out.
