Listening this morning and blown away. Been waiting for this since surround first was introduced and it was worth the wait.

Wasn't this released in the boxset with 5.1 but not all the tracks had it?

I'll probably get it to support the format, though this is not my favorite Who album.

Does that mean you don't like the album?

What Who do you prefer?

It's the usual pic of the sunken scooter. Yes it's 96kHz.

It's pretty much the ideal album for the 5.1 format

Agreed. I'm trying to stick with vinyl for almost all my listening now, but Quadrophenia (which I do own on vinyl, natch) was always very experimental sonically, and the reformatting seems to be a logical step.

It's easily The Who's most complex album, and I'm still trying to grasp it musically. Especially the recurring themes, like where the chord sequence of Bell Boy is laid over the melodic theme of Helpless Dancer. Or I may have that backwards. Or even the wrong themes. That's what I'm talking about though. There's just so much going on there.

Who's Next is a much better album for my tastes.

It's hard to look at Who's Next objectively anymore, as it's sooooooooo overplayed on so-called "classic rock" stations.

I've been on a bit of a Who kick the last couple of years, mostly discovering their earlier work (when I was first getting into The Who way back in high school, it was pretty much a steady diet of Tommy and Who's Next for me). The Who Sells Out, for example, is friggin' amazing. Before, I'd only heard I Can See For Miles, the lone "hit" from that record. But there's some really good songs, not to mention some noodling from Pete Townshend that would eventually resurface on Tommy.

IMO, Quadrophenia is the best album The Who ever recorded. By sticking more with themes and less on narrative, they sidestep some of the issues with Tommy, the songwriting is all top notch, the playing is the band in top form, and it's got the best vocals Daltry ever sang. If I could only listen to one Who album for the rest of my life, it would undoubtedly be Quadrophenia.

Re: Quadrophenia is finally out in 5.1 Blu Ray and it's amazing

I was watching the Live in London concert last night, and an interesting thought came to mind: Do you think Jimmy the Mod would actually like the Quadrophenia album? (and yes, I'm aware that Jimmy is a fictional character). Just curious how a former mod band would make an album about the mod scene, yet the music on that album is almost the antithesis of the mod sound. Then again, I guess that was addressed in the "The Punk Meets the Godfather" song and again in "Bell Boy", how someone you idolized isn't at all who you think they are. Even if Quadrophenia is more aimed at a musical theme rather than a narrative one (as mentioned above), it really is an examination of The Who's evolution, where they came from, and who they eventually became.

Re: Quadrophenia is finally out in 5.1 Blu Ray and it's amazing

Back in early 2012, I realized that "Quadrophenia" was an album that I never really got into, so I put the CDs in my car's stereo and listened to it frequently. Doing that got me to finally appreciate how great an album it is.

Then a few months later after I did that, The Who announced they were starting a new Quadrophenia tour where they would play the entire album. It seemed like perfect timing to me, so I saw a show of that tour in November 2012.

So now, after all that, "Quadrophenia" is my favorite album by The Who

Re: Quadrophenia is finally out in 5.1 Blu Ray and it's amazing

word is that the Dolby TrueHD audio track on the bluray has audio drop outs.

All the tracks are 96/24, both DTS-HD MA and TrueHD for 5.1. There's also PCM stereo, as well as the original 1973 in stereo. I've only done spot checks of the stereo mixes so far.

Anyway, I was hoping to find some discussion of this title because I have a slight problem. There's a short dropout at 1:08:03.5 in the TrueHD mix *only*. In Doctor Jimmy... The disc looks physically flawless, so I was hoping to find out if it's a problem at the source files, or a manufacturing issue not affecting all copies. If the latter I'd exchange it.

I almost always prefer the TrueHD mixes for music, yet the DTS-HD MA mix for movies (when there's the option to choose). Go figger. So that's why this bugs me. I had a hard time finding anybody who listened to the TrueHD mix of this title, so thanks if you can do a spot-check.

Edit: I just got a mail from a guy who said his skips ahead several seconds at 1:08:03 (Samsung player, Oppo here); didn't mention the audio format but I'm assuming... He said there are lots of reports of manufacturing issues with this title, I'll have to check that out.

Edit again: also a very short dropout at TrueHD 1:12:14.5, probably need to listen carefully to hear this. These dropouts happen on two different Oppos, a Sony BDP plus a PS3, and a no-name that plays anything an Oppo doesn't. I'll exchange this disc once
