A pre-order for Ludacris' new album is free as well on Google.

It's a new 6-song EP, here's the link:
https://play.google.com/store/music/...p5lyhed6ydvily

Here's the wording from the email:
"Ludacris is back with an exclusive 6-song EP, Burning Bridges, on December 16. For a limited time, get the album for free when you pre-order your copy."

So you "pre-order" it for free now, and then on 12/16 it gets added to your Google Play library.

Don't know much about Lorde, but I sampled the album and Guardians when they were $5 on Amazon and decided I didn't NEED to have them. But free is great!

Note that it's Windows 8+ only. People have reported success using the Windows Technical Preview of Windows 10:

Re: DVD Talk's awesome free music thread!

Seems like some tracks are missing from the ZZ Top box set (9 to exact). Had encountered a similar situation in downloading some of the free ones, but when I went back into the site for the album, it appeared & was able download them.

Unfortunately, it did not work this time. Logged into the Microsoft Community site to log the problem:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/m...ic?tab=Threads

Guys, double check to make certain all the tracks are appearing for that album/box set.

Update: The tracks finally appeared on the site & I was able to download them.

Thanks. Modified my post to note this.

Re: DVD Talk's awesome free music thread!

Thanks for posting the deal!

Windows 8.1 sometimes takes a few tries to "get" the album, but it eventually works.

$1.99 box sets are great. Here are the ones I've found so far:

Rolling Stones singles collection
Grateful Dead complete Studio Albums collection
George Harrison All Things Must Pass
John Lennon Signature Box
Elton John Greatest Hits 1970-2002
Frank Sinatra Complete Capitol Singles Collection
Tom Petty Live Anthology
A John Coltrane Retrospective: The Impulse Years
The Bee Gees Mythology
The Supremes: The Supremes
Eric Clapton: Crossroads 2 Live in the '70s
The Doors: Complete Studio Albums
The Police: Message in a Box The Complete Recordings

Hmm... I wonder if it's possible to access the Windows stuff on a phone without a contract...? i.e. Just get a handset connected to wi-fi. If so, maybe it would be possible/cost-effective to buy a Windows phone on Friday and get some discounted music......

I don't see why it wouldn't work. The deal is for Microsoft to promote Windows, not to promote any cell carriers.

Another possibility for the technically inclined is to install Windows Tech Preview into a VM on a Mac/PC and download from there. That's basically free.

Ludacris's upcoming EP is a free preorder in the Play store right now.

EDIT: Whoops. Somehow I didn't see that it was already mentioned above. Sorry. Anyway, I routinely check this site to see what notable music freebies are in the Play store:

Re: DVD Talk's awesome free music thread!

Microsoft has updated the selection of free albums (which is now down to 50) in the Music Deals app for Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone users. New selections include Bastille, Black Eyed Peas, CHVRCHES, Daft Punk, Florence + The Machine, The Future Sound of London, The Orb, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and also a bunch of others I have no interest in.

Thanks! A number of new titles so I grabbed a few I wanted, a few I'd never heard of, and a few I already owned but might want in the Xbox app if I ever play music on my console.

But damn, is that 8.1 app buggy. I'm used to needing two or three tries for each purchase, but it took me like 12 for Lady Gaga, and she really wasn't worth it. And it's not a bad password because that generates a specific error message.

Next step is to figure out how to get all this stuff from my 8.1 laptop to my main computer where my music is.

EDIT: Looks like all the downloaded files went into a music folder with subfolders by artist and subsubfolders by album. Transfer should be easy if I use a portable hard drive.

What happened to DECEMBER 14?

No more $1.99 deals either. Stupid Windows.

I guess Amazon isn't doing their usual 25 days of free Christmas music

But here's an annual Christmas freebie.

Re: DVD Talk's awesome free music thread!

I'm really unhappy with Microsoft and Windows 8.

I spent hours installing Windows, buying and (trying to) downloading multiple albums - many of the paid bargains and all the free ones - only to have the computer crash and need total reformatting... Finally got it sorted, installed the trial 8.1, and NOTHING was in my collection.

Three hours on the phone with MS support, being passed between people and departments ("we're very sorry, I'm sure X can help"), and finally talked to someone who actually understood, sympathised and had the answer: sorry, nothing to be done.

Obviously I haven't really lost anything - some glitch meant I wasn't even charged for the paid ones, so I can't even claim that side of it - but that's probably eight or nine hours completely wasted; bargains missed and freebies unclaimed.

At least there are new ones today, which is nice...

Quite. There were interplay problems between the Music and Deals programmes (crash, crash, reboot, hang) the whole time, which can't have helped, but it may have been a problem with the mouse or impatience - given how rare it was that everything looked functional, I clicked as quick as I could! - but... it's baffling, annoying and they (probably reasonably, but still) wouldn't match the deals I "missed".*
