Spoon -- "They Want My Soul" -- 8/05/2014
Spoon have announced the follow up to 2010's Transference. As NPR Music reports, it's called They Want My Soul and arrives August 5 via new label Loma Vista. (Spoon were formerly signed to Merge.) For the first time, the band worked with outside producers: The record was begun by Joe Chiccarelli (Morrissey, My Morning Jacket) before being finished by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT, Sparklehorse). It also features contributions from new Spoon member Alex Fischel, who played with Daniel in Divine Fits.
Spoon have also been teasing something called "R.I.P." that will be revealed on June 10.
An interview with NPR Music features clips from new songs "Knock Knock Knock", "Inside Out" the title track, and a cover of Ann-Margret's "I Just Don't Understand", which Daniel originally recorded for Rookie before deciding to save it for the album. (He ended up covering a different song for Rookie.)
With NPR, Britt Daniel discussed the band's hiatus. "Between 2001 and 2010, we put out five records, which is not a lot by '60s standards. But in terms of today's standards, it's pretty fast," he said. "I mean, especially since concert promoters run the business now. And that's the way you make money, is doing shows, you know? So we just needed a break. And when we got back together, I felt that that break was a good thing. And we were all excited about playing again."
Daniel also said that the title track is inspired by "a guy who used to beat me up as I was walking home from middle school," who also inspired 2002's "Jonathan Fisk". He added, "It's a song about religious pretenders, manipulators, educated folksingers, people that bring me down." But, not to worry: He and his middle school bully ended up becoming friends later in life. "He became a big Spoon fan," Daniel said.
The band are on tour now:

Saw these guys Friday night at the Forecastle festival and solid as always. Seeing them again on Detroit in September. New songs are pretty good to my ears.

Based on the three tracks on the Vinyl Gratification 10" disc they're giving away when you pre-order the album, I'm very excited to hear the rest of the album.

Wish I could hear the new tracks...
I went to our local record store in OKC and the one in Norman, and neither of the people working there knew what I was talking about. At least one of them had the three track promo, but no dice.
I might just preorder the colored vinyl from the website at this point

Bought the CD - been listening to it while driving this week - good stuff! Better than their last album, but still not as good as the few before that. It is a bit short and I don't care for the 2nd song, but otherwise, I like it a lot.

I'm really, really digging this. One of the best albums of the year so far.
I was itching to do the vinyl gratification thing but glad I waited since I pre-ordered the blue vinyl w/glow-in-the-dark cover. This is a seriously sexy peice of vinyl. And it sounds great, unlike the digital version which sounds a lot more compressed to my ears.

Is there a more consistently great band than Spoon? They haven't released a bum album yet and the new one is fantastic.

Thought I'd bump this thread because two years later I'm still loving this album. This album has stuck with me more than any other Spoon album. The songs are great, the lyrics are great, Britt's voice sounds great, the production is great etc. IMO, it's one of the better albums in recent years. I have no idea why this band isn't more popular. They make terrifically catchy singles and it seems like their sound should have broad appeal.
