Pavement to reunite, tour in 2010

from the AP:

Iconic `90s indie rock band Pavement to reunite

NEW YORK – Pavement, one of the most influential indie rock bands of the `90s, will reunite.

The band's label, Matador Records, announced the reunion Thursday, confirming long-rumored plans. Pavement will reconvene for a tour — and only a tour — to begin Sept. 21, 2010, at Rumsey Playfield in New York's Central Park.

Though not hugely commercially successful, the California-based band is widely credited for its influential low-fidelity sound and ramshackle artistry.

Pavement broke up in 2000. Several of its members have since released solo material, most notably its lead singer and songwriter, Stephen Malkmus.

No other dates have been announced.

I'm so excited. One of my favorite bands, never had the opportunity to see them live. They better hit Detroit on this "World" tour.

If you've never heard of this band, the majority of their albums are available in very reasonable priced but incredibly deluxe editions from Matador.

Yep, hopefully it is a real tour and not one of those LA, NYC, CHI, ATL, DC-only type tours.

Awesome news, but I've also really grown to dig the Jicks. Hopefully, Malkmus keeps that band going as well.

Isn't a year a long time to wait for a reunion concert? Do they have to rehearse that long?

If they were true to their legacy, they wouldn't rehearse at all!

I'm not getting my hopes up - reading through the interview on rollingstone, it doesn't really state a tour but instead mentions the Central Park show and that they are talking to some festivals.

Central Park show sold out quickly. I'm hoping there will be a Chicago date.

They just added a second Central Park show. Nice that these guys should rake in some cash for this reunion.

Re: Pavement to reunite, tour in 2010

Might as well post this here:

Matador will release Quarantine the Past: The Best of Pavement, a career retrospective compilation from reunited indie deities Pavement, on March 9. (Domino will release it a day earlier in the UK.) The 23-track album draws from Pavement's entire pre-breakup run, and though it doesn't include any previously unreleased material, it does "dig deeper than the hits," as Matador promised. The Matablog just announced that tracklist, and it's true to their word.
Every Pavement song that could be considered a "hit", however nebulously, is accounted for: "Cut Your Hair", "Stereo", "Shady Lane", "Range Life", "Summer Babe (Winter Version)", etc. But the comp also includes a few left-field choices, like the R.E.M. tribute "Unseen Power of the Picket Fence", Pavement's contribution to Red Hot's 1993 No Alternative compilation.
Check out the tracklist below:

Quarantine the Past: The Best of Pavement:

01 Gold Soundz (Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain)
02 Frontwards (Watery, Domestic EP)
03 Mellow Jazz Docent (Perfect Sound Forever EP)
04 Stereo (Brighten the Corners)
05 In the Mouth a Desert (Slanted & Enchanted)
06 Two States (Slanted & Enchanted)
07 Cut Your Hair (Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain)
08 Shady Lane / J Vs. S (Brighten the Corners)
09 Here (Slanted & Enchanted)
10 Unfair (Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain)
11 Grounded (Wowee Zowee)
12 Summer Babe (Winter Version) (Slanted & Enchanted)
13 Range Life (Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain)
14 Date w/ IKEA (Brighten the Corners)
15 Debris Slide (Perfect Sound Forever EP)
16 Shoot the Singer (1 Sick Verse) (Watery, Domestic EP)
17 Spit on a Stranger (Terror Twilight)
18 Heaven Is a Truck (Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain)
19 Trigger Cut/Wounded-Kite at :17 (Slanted and Enchanted)
20 Embassy Row (Brighten the Corners)
21 Box Elder (Slay Tracks 1933-1969 EP)
22 Unseen Power of the Picket Fence (No Alternative compilation)
23 Fight This Generation (Wowee Zowee)

--------------

Interesting tracklisting.

Re: Pavement to reunite, tour in 2010

They are headlining the final night of Coachella on April 18th, so the reunion is proceeding a bit faster than previously reported

Re: Pavement to reunite, tour in 2010

I'm just going to paste what I wrote on the Matador Bulletin Board regarding the upcoming compilation:

I won't be buying this, as I already own all their records, but here are my brief song-by-song comments anyway:

01 Gold Soundz (essential)
02 Frontwards (probably the best song from that EP)
03 Mellow Jazz Docent (meh)
04 Stereo (yes)
05 In the Mouth a Desert (my favorite Pavement song)
06 Two States (I think "Zurik Is Stained" should have taken this one's place)
07 Cut Your Hair (their biggest song ever, so of course it's on here)
08 Shady Lane / J Vs. S (yes)
09 Here (yes)
10 Unfair (no; I see that "Silence Kit" isn't on here for some reason, so this one shouldn't have been picked)
11 Grounded (there are a bunch of songs from WZ that I prefer over this one, like "We Dance," "Kennel District," "AT&T," and "Grave Architecture," but none of them have been included; to be blunt, the two selections from this album are completely puzzling and disappointing)
12 Summer Babe (Winter Version) (obvious choice)
13 Range Life (not one of my favorites, but it's considered a classic so I'm not surprised by its inclusion)
14 Date w/ IKEA (I would have replaced it with "Passat Dream" or "Fin")
15 Debris Slide (never cared for this one much)
16 Shoot the Singer (ditto)
17 Spit on a Stranger (only ONE song from TT? How the hell did the song below make the cut but not "Major Leagues" or "...And Carrot Rope"?)
18 Heaven Is a Truck (boring song; easily the weakest on CR, CR)
19 Trigger Cut/Wounded-Kite at :17 (great song)
20 Embassy Row (underrated song from BTC, and I'm glad it's on here)
21 Box Elder (one of their best early songs)
22 Unseen Power of the Picket Fence (meh)
23 Fight This Generation (this song is too slow and too long; I could name 14 songs from WZ that I would have preferred over this one)

Overall, I think Wowee Zowee is being horribly misrepresented, and there definitely should have been more than one song from Terror Twilight. But I'm not buying it, so pay no attention to my complaints.

Re: Pavement to reunite, tour in 2010

If anyone cares:

http://pitchfork.com/news/52968-step...eo-for-lariat/

As hinted at in our interview with Malkmus last week, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks are back with the follow up to their Beck-produced 2011 LP Mirror Traffic. It's called Wig Out at Jagbags and it's out January 7 via Matador (January 6 in the UK via Domino). Below, check out the video for album track "Lariat". It's the music video, but it also serves as a lyric video... if you speak French.

If you pre-order the album from Matador's store, they'll throw in a one-sided 7" on strawberry red vinyl featuring a non-album track called "Pick Up the Spare".

Malkmus said of the album:

"Wig Out at Jagbags is inspired by Cologne, Germany, Mark Von Schlegell, Rosemarie Trockel, Von Spar and Jan Lankisch, Can and Gas; Stephen-Malkmus-imagined Weezer/Chili Peppers, Sic Alps, UVA in the late 80's, NYRB, Aroma Charlottenburg, inactivity, Jamming, Indie guys tring to sound Memphis, Flipper, Pete Townshend, Pavement, The Joggers, The NBA and home life in the 2010's..."

Tracklist:

01 Planetary Motion
02 The Janitor Revealed
03 Lariat
04 Houston Hades
05 Shibboleth
06 J Smoov
07 Rumble at the Rainbo
08 Chartjunk
09 Independence Street
10 Scattegories
11 Cinnamon and Lesbians
12 Surreal Teenagers
