Re: Bowie is back!!! First album in 10 years in March
I spent a few days reading the Steve Hoffman forums before I ran screaming into the hills, ripping my own hair out as I went.

Yes, but there are also a good number of people there raving about how much they like the album, and that it is one of the best of the year, too. Which was more surprising to me, as I only found the album to be "not bad" - meaning that while it isn't terrible, it also isn't great, either. Pleasant enough to have on in the background, but I don't remember a damn bit of it after it's done playing.

it's the music equivalent of AVS Forum - more about equipment and data than enjoying content. these are men who spend 10s of thousands on equipment to listen to the Rocky 4 soundtrack in high rez.

His best since Scary Monsters. It's like he went back and chose Door No. 2 instead of Let's Dance. The opener, "The Next Day," sounds like an outtake from Lodger and it has an edge I haven't heard from Bowie for ages. Love, love, love the backing vocals and Ziggy-vibe of "Valentine's Day." He slips in the "Five Days" drum pattern at the end of "You Feel So Lonely..." Nips a bit of the synth strings from Low at the end of "Plan." The closer, "I'll Take You There," opens with a wailing riff straight out of Scary Monsters. Lots to love for old-school Bowie fans.
Yes, the Rolling Stone types will protest that he is simply regurgitating old ideas and relying on nostalgia, etc, etc.... but fuck me if his old ideas aren't better than 90% of the shit out there.

A cool, albeit long write up on The Next Day from the author of The Ice Storm: http://therumpus.net/2013/04/swingin...d-another-day/

Does anybody else find it weird that there are ads for this album multiple months later? Youtube, random internet sites. Not complaining, but where was this hype at release?
Got me listening to it again though.

It debuted at #1 in the UK and #2 in the US, so it may not have needed blanket advertising at release.

I plan on getting the 3-disc set, but like how they have the digital EP version to allow people who already have the US deluxe edition to get a set with just the 2 mixes, 4 new b-sides, and previously exclusive Japanese deluxe edition track.
Very nice treatment of his fans, IMHO.
Now, if we could only convince them to also put out a vinyl copy of the 7-track EP as a companion to the album. Maybe as a Record Store Day release in November...

I forgot this deluxe edition came out - Amazon sent me an email about it:

Will probably scoop up the 4 bonus tracks at some point.

Man I've been thinking of this post, having listened to the album multiple times in the lats year. TVC 15 is one of my favorite songs, paranoid, crazy, good shit.
I also listened to most of his stuff through the 80's, and want to give it all a re-listen before moving on, since his albums tend to grow on you.

Re: Bowie is back!!! First album in 10 years in March
Another Bowie update for me: I don't know how I was underwhelmed by Aladdin Sane almost four years ago, but now after numerous listenings, I think it's one of the best albums I've ever heard.
