Hawkwind - The unsung GODS of classic rock.

Ive been hearing these guys more and more lately after getting really into them the past year. I heard about them by a group called Ayreon who did a medley of HW songs on a CD. I got the CDs (mp3s really as CDs are hard to find and expensive!) and man these guys are amazing. Just pure psychedelic rock that most, if not ALL the damn music I hear today must have been heavily influenced by these guys.

One time I was with my dad and I popped in the CD with the song "Master of The Universe" and his face lit up like Al Bundy when he found out who did the "go with himmmm" song! He than told me how he loved this song and hadnt heard it since the 70s in his car and always wondered about it never knowing who it was. He always thought it was an Aerosmith song. He than proceeded to tell me there were times he would ask me about the song in the past and if I ever knew who did it and I was always "nope!"

Go hear these guys. Im hearing the Levitation album now and its just genius.

I've been pimping this band to anyone who will listen for years. I hear their influence in many, many bands these days. They're like Neu! or the Velvet Underground: cult bands that basically changed music because every musician listened to them.

If you like them, check out Amon Duul 2, a key influence for them that is also unsung (in America at least).

I have 6 of their albums: 'Doremi Fasol Latido', 'Space Ritual' (double live), 'Hall of the Mountain Grill', 'Warrior On The Edge Of Time', 'Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music', and 'Quark, Strangeness, and Charm'. Saw them once in concert back in the mid 70's (Cleveland, OH), stoned out of my mind, those guys were phenomenal! I would venture to call the genre of music they played Space Rock rather than Classic Rock. Classic Rock was Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton. Hawkwind was anything BUT. Lemmy Kilmister (Motorhead) came from Hawkwind.

I'll never forget that concert. -kd5-

Here they are with Lemmy. Look like they're ready to rape and pillage.

Hawkwind are pretty awesome. I've got a few of their albums, but not as many as I would like.
