Best cover songs?

What are some of the best cover songs out there that you like?

It could be one that another band recorded and released, or even one that they perform at concerts/shows?

For the most part I always like to hear bands versions of other songs just to hear their take on it, and I'm looking to add some to my iPod.

For me, I just heard Pearl Jam's cover of Neil Young's 'Rockin' In The Free World' and thought they did a damn fine job with it.

First one that came to my head is Nickel Creek covering "Toxic"

A band nobody but me has ever heard of called Thanks To Gravity does an absolutely mindfuckingly great cover of Madonna/Kravitz ' "Justify My Love".

I think the standard option for this discussion is Johnny Cash's "Hurt".

Phil Manzanera with Brian Eno from the "801 Live" EP with a version of The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows":

Ignore the eye scorching user-created video, just listen to the track.

Audioslave - Seven Nation Army (live)
Patti Smith - When Doves Cry, others
Chris Cornell - Billie Jean (but only the solo acoustic version, not the album single on steroids)
Pixies - In Heaven, Winterlong, Head On, Been All Around the World (live)
Jane's Addiction with Ice-T - Don't Call Me ****** (live)
Joan Jett - She's done a lot of fun covers like Rebel Rebel, Dirty Deeds, Everyday People, I Wanna Be Your Dog
White Stripes - Jolene
Joss Stone - Fell In Love With a Boy

I love good covers, as you could probably already tell. I'll think about this one and probably add a bit more later.

I've always been a huge fan of Rufus Wainwright's version of the Beatles' "Across the Universe". He's faithful to the original, but adds an extra layer that I really enjoy.

Sonic Youth - Superstar
CAKE - War Pigs
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Love Rollercoaster

Local H's version of Toxic is good too.

He also does a really good version of Origin of Love from Hedwig.

"I Fought the Law" might be the most-covered song of all time, but I like The Clash's version the best:

Nickelback w/ Kid Rock did a kick-ass cover of Saturday Night's Alright (for fighting).

Here's a generic video someone made with a bunch of hockey fights.
