So you'd call the Stones, the Who and Zeppelin 60s bands?

It's OK. I can't say I'm blown away or impressed, but it's well produced and slightly catchy. I think it might be a grower, but definitely not a shower.

And FFS someone put that kid on a diet.

Can't say I am thrilled with it as the first one out... Really dislike the chorus as well. I had not planned picking up the new CD anyway so I guess it does not really matter.

Re: Van Halen New Album

Meh.

Ed's tone is nice (not exactly the brown sound) but his solo is completely by the numbers. At least he's not Mr. fumble fingers... which he's been for the last dozen drunken years.

Sounds more like a DLR outtake with EVH on guitar than an actual Van Halen song though.

Re: Van Halen New Album

I'm not a VH fan, but I was expecting a catchy tune of sorts at least - even if I don't care for it. But this new song has no real hook and is just bland as hell.

For the most part, yes. However, I think once you've bridged more than one decade as a successful band, you are no longer defined by any one decade. This would hold true for all those bands, and Van Halen. I suppose what I really meant to say, is that I would hardly refer to Van Halen as an "80s" band, or more precisely, just an "80s" band.

Pretty much what I was thinking, other than no so much an outtake, as just a DLR solo tune in general.

Looks like the rumor someone mentioned in the other thread is correct. This single seems to be a reworking of "Down In Flames".

The intro to that is also very similar to their cover of "You're No Good" from VH II. (After the bass intro in the song below). The riff is somewhat, too, although at a different tempo.

So in essence, they double dipped on musical ideas from this unreleased tune. Wouldn't be the first band to do so, and far from the last.

I always find it interesting that so many bands have these prolific creative streaks in the prime of their careers and then years later they try to make a comeback and can't come up with a decent new song to save themselves. It's like the creative well just dries up.

I cant believe how bad this song is. Also, David Lee Roth is a cornball.

Re: Van Halen New Album

I like Tattoo. I think it's a good song. Not a great one, but a good one - and it's been growing on me.

My gut feeling is that it's actually one of the weaker songs on the album, but they went with it as a single because of the tempo/beat and it's somewhat accessible. And it is a song from the 70's.

Yeah, but I'd rather see them dip into old, unused material of their own in doing it, than go the route of using outside songwriters to doctor up the material. I'll give them that much.

Re: Van Halen New Album

I'm shocked people aren't tearing this single apart. It's awful! Completely toothless. I can't believe they put their name to that.

Are people so desperate for new Van Halen material that they're giving this a pass?

You do recall songs like, "Jump," and, "I'll Wait," that were released as singles, right? Talk about toothless! Tattoo is Slayer compared to those songs!

Re: Van Halen New Album

I'll Wait is a terrible song, I agree. Jump is a polished piece of pop that more importantly is a thousand times catchier than Tattoo. This song feels lazy. This isn't the song you release to re-establish one of the biggest bands in rock.

Re: Van Halen New Album

Not a very good tune. I don't really care, though. All this DLR action at the very least keeps us from having to deal with Van Haggar.

Re: Van Halen New Album

I'm with Supermallet. I can't believe people are even giving this a pass. The lyrics are tired and uninspired, and it lacks any catchy hooks I've come to expect from the guys.

I also got my first real look at Wolfie and if I didn't know better, I'd swear he simply ate Michael Anthony in order to replace him.

Sure could use some MA background vocals. Roth looks like he's trying to hard to channel himself! As for the song overall, I sort of like it. But, there's just no bite.

This is true. At least they didn't do a power ballad written by Diane Warren or Linda Perry. Yet.

Re: Van Halen New Album

For those who have been to the 2008 shows with DLR back with VH, do they do any Hagar era songs? Just curious. Heard sammy do tons of VH classics. VH is coming our way in March. I saw VH in '87 and '90, but have never seen the DLR version. With the new album coming out, I can't imagine there would be much room for any sammy songs in the set list.

Re: Van Halen New Album

I don't really mind the new song, to me it's neither awesome or terrible. It gets a bit catchy after a few listens and way better than anything they did with Cherone. That said, as others have mentioned, it sounds to me like it could have been a song on Roth's Skyscraper album.

There's no way they'd bother to do Hagar-era songs.

Re: Van Halen New Album

Got a pre-sale notice today and apparently Kool and the Gang are the opening act... I shit you not.

I'm much more interested in Asia Carrera's porn comeback than I am Van Halen.
