I almost mentioned this in my remarks, but wanted to hold off until we got to the 30th Anniversary Limited Edition collection. Since you brought it up, though, it's a very bizarre recording to hear after hearing the Bassey version. It's like some kind of monotone lounge version, the kind of thing that Shatner did in the 70s with "Rocket Man," only far more lifeless. I dig it, but it is weird with a beard.

Re: Album by Album: James Bond Soundtracks

I'll take a stab at You Only Live Twice, then. In a word: "lush." The sweeping string arrangement of the title song is beautiful, and the "Space March" motif--while dated--befits the scope of the action on screen. "Mountains and Sunsets" and "The Wedding" are particularly lovely. As a Bond soundtrack, it's off the beaten path a bit, veering away from the more conventional spy/action aesthetic of its predecessors. It's not my favorite, but it's among the most interesting.

As for the polarizing title song, at first I wasn't much of a fan. After a while, like most things Bond, it grew on me. I've always loved the sound of the song; it just took me a while to accept it as a Bond theme.

adrenaline78, I'm glad you've decided to stroll down Bond Music Memory Lane with us! I really resisted "Another Way to Die" for quite a while, thinking that surely they'd change their mind at the eleventh hour. It's another one that really grew on me. Hearing the instrumental version (vinyl single release) helped. I'll comment more once we get to Quantum of Solace.

Re: Album by Album: James Bond Soundtracks

I gotta get back into this and catch up but here is an announcement for a special edition release of Casino Royale (1967) soundtrack for those who are interested. Personally I despise the movie and usually don't acknowledge it's existence but figured some here may be interested. I don't care for the soundtrack either as too dull or sounds too Benny Hillish. Very hokey sounding. It's hard for me to like soundtracks for movie I hate anyway so I am likely being over-critical, but so be it.

Here's the info. I have bought from the site several times and they are solid. I don't own the original release and I will be passing on this one as well.

http://buysoundtrax.stores.yahoo.net/caroormgmsob.html
In 1953, British author Ian Fleming created one of the most enduring cinematic characters with the publication of his first 007 novel, Casino Royale. Thirteen years later, producer Charles K. Feldman (of What’s New Pussycat? fame) reimagined Fleming’s story as a large-scale, star-studded spy spoof inspired by the Bond mania that swept across the world in the 1960s. While not exactly delivering the kind of James Bond films audiences had loved and come to expect, Casino Royale has became a cult classic in the ensuing decades, a colorful addendum to the history of the 007 legacy. With an all-star cast that included David Niven, Deborah Kerr, John Huston, Woody Allen, Peter Sellers, cameos by Jean-Paul Belmondo, David McCallum, and Peter O’Toole, and even featuring an authentic Bond girl, Ursula Andress (from Dr. No), the rag-tag craziness on view was directed by several different directors – John Huston, Joseph McGrath, Robert Parrish, with Val Guest overseeing the entire production. As would be expected, the end result was eclectic, sometimes very funny, and sometimes just plain weird.

One person who immensely helped tie the whole thing together was the brilliant Burt Bacharach, who provided one of the most popular and universally applauded features of Casino Royale: its musical score. Hired on the strength of his music for What’s New Pussycat?, the composer was expected to bring the same kind of cheek to Feldman’s latest picture, offering a colorful kaleidoscope that went on to define the Swingin’ Sixties without referencing the typical musical spy vernacular. In fact, Bacharach’s approach is much closer to the Henry Mancini/Blake Edwards song scores such as The Pink Panther or The Party, which may explain the soundtrack’s extraordinary success on its own. The score was nominated for a Grammy and “The Look of Love” received an Oscar nomination. Bacharach had, of course, had countless hits by the time of this film, and would go on to have countless more (one of the only pop song composers to have hits in every decade since the 1950s), as well as providing the soundtracks to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Arthur, and many other films.

This is the third CD release for Casino Royale (although both releases on Varese Sarabande were pretty much identical) – the original LP has long been considered one of the great audiophile releases, thanks to a nod in The Absolute Sound. But due to an unfortunate accident, just prior to the transfer of the master tape, the tape was rewound too quickly and stripped of iron oxide, thereby compromising and damaging the tape. The transfer could still be made and the CD came out – but anyone expecting it to sound like the LP was disappointed, and for obvious reasons. For this release, we have spent much time in trying to alleviate some of the effects of the tape damage – our mastering engineer, James Nelson, has painstakingly and lovingly repaired numerous dropouts and other anomalies and we’ve worked very hard to get this to sound as good as it ever has or will, and the result is pretty amazing. We’ve also added three short bonus cues, available on CD for the first time, including the original end credits vocal. And, of course, we get the great performances of Dusty Springfield and Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass.

But one of the main reasons for doing this third CD release was to offer as a bonus a straight transfer of that original record – done from several pristine copies of the LP – so that the original sound, with no additional processing or EQ, is captured on CD for the very first time. We leave it for others to judge whether that sound holds up for today’s listeners. Given what happened to the master tape, this is as close to that original LP sound as we’re ever going to get.

This very special release is limited to 1000 copies only. The price of the CD is $19.98, plus shipping. Additionally, we are offering a special deal with the purchase of this release.

CD will ship the last week of January

Re: Album by Album: James Bond Soundtracks

I hated Casino Royale when I was a kid but really got into in college. I even special ordered the soundtrack way back in 1991. Big Bacharach fan here.

Thanks for that link! Just ordered it. Made my Christmas merry!!!

Continue hating on the spoof Casino Royale.

Re: Album by Album: James Bond Soundtracks

Not to turn this into a movie review but it would be different if it was a funny spoof like Austin Powers or flawed but still enjoyable such as the Flint movies. But I never found one shred of CR funny or enjoyable. Nothing. It's not even groan worthy. Just a plain out, bad movie. If you have some sort of nostalgia feeling for it, I can give that a pass because I have my bad movies that I like strictly due to seeing them a million times on HBO as a kid. But without nostalgia, I don't see how any person could like this movie. I especially get irritated when it is included in any James Bond movie lists. NSNA is a JB film. This movie is not.

There. I got that off my chest. Sorry for the rant.

Re: Album by Album: James Bond Soundtracks

Listened to Thunderball for the millionth time today. I love this soundtrack and it is one of my favorite of the early JB movies. There is a little bit of "danger music" in this but it doesn't seem as obvious as Goldfinger. The "Death Of Fiona" is awesome and one of my favorite tracks but that may be more due to the awesome scene in the movie more than anything. The drums just going freaking crazy while this nice little tune continues to play in the background. Then it gets completely nuts and then just goes right back to that little tune...so sweetly. Love it.

Of course "007" makes another appearance which is fine with me. Anytime I can hear it I will take it. I love the instrumental of "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" but the versions with lyrics not so much. If I have to choose, give me Dionne Warwick's version or Shirley Bassey's. At least you can understand the words with Warwick singing. Bassey's odd pronunciation all through the song just tends to grate on my nerves.

I love "Street Chase" which is basically "007" but with the Death of Fiona's drums/bongos throughout. What really amazes me about this score is how well John Barry is able to somehow capture a "watery" sound for the music during the ocean scenes.

I almost forgot to mention the title track. Awesome. I have always liked Tom Jones and he is the perfect male singer to follow up for a Shirley Bassey song. Strong voice and he nails it. I really like most of the lyrics but would love to know what a thunderball is and how to strike like one.

My favorite lines which are great for describing Bond:

He always runs while others walk.
He acts while other men just talk.
His needs are more, so he gives less.
His days of asking are all gone.

Great soundtrack. My rating: ****1/2 out of *****

Re: Album by Album: James Bond Soundtracks

Casino Royale is one of the few Bond soundtracks not in my library, actually. I always liked Herb Alpert's main title, which is swingin' fun. I am otherwise fairly unfamiliar with the soundtrack, as I've only seen the movie twice and don't really remember much from Bacharach's score.

Instead of me creating a new post for that album, we'll just go ahead and consider that announcement post from brainluvdvd its entry in our thread. I'll probably post On Her Majesty's Secret Service in the next couple of days, leading us right into Christmas weekend. It seems appropriate. Feel free to use this time to get caught up on any remarks you have about the albums to date, including 1967's Casino Royale.

Re: Album by Album: James Bond Soundtracks

^ We're about nine albums away from Never Say Never Again, but as I've become sidetracked with the TV on DVD* Challenge and neglected this thread, let's just go ahead and get this one out of the way. The score has a couple highlights ("Une Chanson d'Amour," "Tango to the Death"), but is largely forgettable. It suits the film fairly well, though, and is probably a cut above Bill Conti's similarly dated score for 1981's For Your Eyes Only.

The title song is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, though.

Re: Album by Album: James Bond Soundtracks

Shoot I missed the early YOLT discussion but really just want to say that's probably my favorite Bond score with The Living Daylights and A View To A Kill right there behind it.

As for Never Say Never Again, yes, it's pretty awful but I do like the piece "Jealousy" which is a funky fretless bass-driven piece which plays well with the dance studio bits. But the rest of it is too light and plays more like a 60's lounge album than a Bond score.

Don't forget there was another song that was going to be the title song song by Phyills Hyman. It can be heard on YOUTUBE and bought on AMAZON.

Re: Album by Album: James Bond Soundtracks

Sorry for the month long delay! I got distracted with the TV on DVD* Challenge and kind of forgot about this thread. Anyway, OHMSS stands as one of the strongest scores in the Bond canon, which is almost surprising given the high prevalence of synthesizer. Barry makes it work, though, and the driving main title is killer. Louis Armstrong's weary vocals infuse "We Have All the Time in the World" with an endearing sweetness (alas, that's not him playing horn; he was incapable of performing by the time of recording). Another standout is the romping version of "James Bond Theme" played over the end credits (an arrangement David Arnold would steal for 1999's The World Is Not Enough).

The 2003 CD reissue is a must for Bond music fans, adding ten tracks and expanding an eleventh ("Journey to Blofeld's Hideaway"). Sean Connery may not have been on hand, but John Barry's score made it clear that this was a James Bond movie.

I need to add this to my collection. I have always loved the main theme and the Armstrong vocal on the collections I have owned. Must be his final recording right?

EDIT: just made an impulse buy over on iTunes.

It's my understanding that this was the last song he recorded, yes.

I think it is. I don't understand why in this age of iTunes that these CDs are so limited. It just encourages illegal downloading. I think I read somewhere that Kritzerland is imposed limits by the record companies. Oh well, off topic and a subject for another thread I suppose. Good luck finding it.

EDIT: Sweet Jeezus these are going for $100 and $130 Buy It Nows over on eBay.

That fucking sucks. I had just recently started buying every soundtrack he has ever done (his music just speaks to me for some reason) and was really surprised to see that his last movie score was back in 2001 for Enigma.

Going thru his movie score history is quite interesting. Some huge hits and some even huger duds but even in the terrible ones, his score always stood out and was better than the movie most of the time.

My current favorite score by him is The Last Valley. Bought it blind and have listened to it constantly for the past week. Never even heard of the movie but the score is fantastic.

This really makes me sad. Wonder what will be played at his funeral? Somewhere In Time would be my pick.

For those who are interested or love John Barry's stuff like I do, I highly recommend this book. I bought a copy recently but haven't finished it yet but it is excellent.

I may have double dipped on the CR score - I think the only place I could find the bonus tracks outside importing a CD for crazy money was through iTunes.

What did he say about the Bond movies in his book?
I heard he was asked to do NEVER SAY AGAIN but declined because of loyalty to Cubby B.
