Public Enemy looking for fans to fund new album

Quote:
Public Enemy asking fans to raise $250,000 to help record new album

Chuck D and co sign a deal with fan funding engine SellaBand

Public Enemy are asking fans to help fund the recording of their next album.

The rap collective have signed a deal with fan funding engine SellaBand, and are aiming to raise $250,000 in increments of $25 in order to record and release the as-yet-untitled album. In return, fans who invest in the album will receive a share in the revenue of the album, as well as a numbered copy of it.

Speaking about the deal in a statement, Public Enemy's Chuck D hailed SellaBand's business model.

"SellaBand's financial engine model goes about restructuring the music business in reverse," he explained. "It starts with fans first, then the artists create from there. The music business is built on searching for fans and this is a brand new way for acts to create a new album with fans first, already on board."

Public Enemy are the first high profile band to sign a deal with SellaBand, which is based in Amsterdam. Under the deal, they will retain complete ownership of the album, and can also choose how fans are rewarded for funding them.

I love the guys but I don't know how they're going to pull this off. I would love to contribute but I'm low on funds.

I'll pitch in if Flavor Flav promises to never do another reality show, ever.

Interesting. But you could give the $25 and never see an album.

I'd do this for a band that was artistically relevant now.

I looked, but Creed isn't on their list of artists.

It's actually not a bad idea at all, except for the as-mentioned-possibility of not getting anything out of your $25 if the project doesn't go through.

I don't think I'd bet $25 on PE having a hit album in 2010.

Actually since they left Def Jam in the late 90s, they've been releasing their own stuff through the Slamjamz label. While Flavor Flav might have become a walking joke, the bands last two albums have been very good and been soically relevent unlike most rap released today.

Half of that, if not more, is probably going to producers.

They could raise twice that much if Flav turned in his grill to one of those "Cash for Gold" places.

Receive a share in the revenue?

Uh, hey Chuck, this ain't 1984, ok? CDs don't make shit anymore, so that's like saying I'll receive a hotel on Mars.

Also, did all you motherfuckas blow your cash or something? Chuck D and Flava Flav can't come up with $250,000 on their own?

That's what I'm thinking. If P.E. has been relegated to begging for dollars to make an album then it is a sad day for one of the great groups of all time.

Re: Public Enemy looking for fans to fund new album

Since they don't have a major label backing them anymore I don't know how much of the green stuff they got lying around. They tour a lot but I think a lot of that is coming out of their own pockets.

Re: Public Enemy looking for fans to fund new album

I remember like a year or two ago reading about these plans by Def Jam/Universal to re-release deluxe versions of all their classic albums (re-mastered CD's, DVD's, lost tracks, etc. - you know the drill). Looks like nothing ever came of those plans.

Re: Public Enemy looking for fans to fund new album

Marillion's been doing this for years now, but they don't take 'investments' - they actually presell the album a year or so in advance. Usually the people who are willing to put up their money that early will get their name printed in the booklet, special edition packaging (some of the coolest packaging I've seen), and oftentimes music that isn't available on the regular edition sold in stores or available after the album is released.

It's worked out pretty well for them as they've done it 3 times now I believe.

I wouldn't go for Public Enemy's scheme though - wouldn't feel I was getting my money's worth.

No, I think they are asking for a ridiculous amount of money to record an album because they can't get a label to spring for it. Get up and coming producers, write and rehearse before entering the studio and they can get this made for 50k tops.
